Anyone recommend a similar FPS in that regard?

Wait, really? I thought an Xbox Gold subscription has always been a prerequisite to enable multiplayer lobbies for any game on Xbox since its original release. Also, I'm confused because the Xbox website shows that this game is free to download: https://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/...p5g1f0c2b6.
I use my old Xbox 360/One consoles as decorative dust collectors but haven't played video games in probably 15 years, so I know I'm out of the loop. But what am I missing? Why pay $15 from Best Buy when you can get it free from Microsoft? And do they somehow have an agreement in place that circumnavigates the Xbox Gold purchase requirement to play online multiplayer? Or is Xbox Gold no longer a thing?
