I read up on both versions a fair bit when buying mine and by and large it seemed to come down to the charging port being 5-pin USB-A on version 1 and USB-C on version 2.

Didn't realize there was a version 2. Have two of versions 1. Great mouse.

Also has a higher max polling rate (4000Hz vs 1000Hz) and optical switches instead of mechanical.

my understanding is that the optical switches are finally supposed to resolve the double clicking issue. has anyone confirmed that? might be worth it for that alone.

My understanding as well. But mouse is too new to determine if it resolves the issue; My SL1 developed double-clicking after 12-24 months (twice!).

I have the G PRO X SUPERLIGHT Generation 1.
This 2nd generation is actually the third generation of the whole series.
Under normal use for about 1.5 years, there is a problem with the left button connecting the dots.
There is a tutorial on Youtube, take out a metal plate and scrape off the dirt and it will be back to normal.

This series of Omron does not solve the problem.
static solution
1.Turning off the mouse power
2. pressing each button vigorously can eliminate the static electricity generated by continuous clicking .about 1 min
If the static solution doesn't work, you will have to scrape off the dirt, but the parts are so small that there is a high probability of failure.

I removed it and it's working fine now.
