For some reason I feel like the RTX 3050 has a bad rep. Is that true? what would I be missing out on by going with this instead of 3070 or 3080 in other deals recently?

Depends what games you play. It's great for Fortnite or most strategy games, although I was surprised I had to reduce the settings in Aliens Dark Descent.
If you want to play an Unreal 5 game, forget about it.
This isn't super scientific but I'm currently using it at 3 notches from the highest brightness setting, on best power efficiency power mode, and 56% battery level with an estimated time remaining of 3 hours and 35 min. This roughly translates to a little less than 7 hours on full charge. I think if I brought the screen brightness down another notch, I could get it to 7+ hours.

It's not a bad GPU. The fact that it is a dedicated GPU means that it will be FAR better than many integrated GPU offerings. Additionally, this implementation comes with 6GB of VRAM. Most 3050s came with only 4GB. That said, as dGPUs go, it IS on the lower end. 3050 ti, 3060, 4050.... there's so many other options. But this is also going to get DLSS (but no frame generation).
That said, this isn't a bad laptop for the price. The specs on the display are very good, the processor is very good. Yes, the memory is soldered, so that's limiting, But it's also got a 1TB SSD and it also includes a fingerprint reader, which is convenient and it's not that heavy compared to a lot of other devices. I own an Acer Helios Neo 16 with a 4050 that I recently bought and that dGPU is much, much better (and heavier).... but I still wouldn't call this laptop bad. It's good. it's really all about what you want to do with it.
