That agent was indeed misinformed. The terms specifically say "Not valid on flights purchased with Rapid Rewards points." I would trust the terms over random agent.

Just booked DAL - HOU for $99 RT (same day return) at end of April. That's cheapest route out of DAL. I believe for Californians, flying within Cali can be done for less than $100 RT too.

It's been said several times. Flight A must NOT be points. Anything else works.

Flight B (and everything in that 2 month period) can be paid for with points or anything else.

Yes. As long as you follow the rules exactly, a short round trip gives you companion pass network wide. My plus+1 only cost $10.2 to fly to HNL, now that's SLICK!

I have flights booked already for a trip in a few weeks. Went to go see if cancelling and rebooking same flight made sense and I would have to pay 5x what I paid to rebook at current rates since I bought on a CA sale about a month ago. Woof. Bummer as I was planning a Hawaii trip this summer.

Every flight I compared southwest was significantly cheaper than all other airlines except some frontier flights. And southwest gives free baggage while many others charge extra. Just looked again and United was about the same price, with no carry on and 80 dollar checked bag, or upgrade for 60 more for a carry on and 80 dollar checked.

And you can use the companion pass for multiple flights so lots of opportunities to save more.

Look at nonstops near your airport and check prices for the ones closest. Almost always the cheapest that way.
