I normally run straight 30 rotella in my small engines and older vehicles with flat tappet cams. The rotella I buy is still rated at SL. This particular oil is SJ rated. The modern 5w30 ratings are SN or SP. Basically the modern oils have removed certain additives that will cause problems with catalytic converters. These additives are needed for older engines with flat tappet cams.
All that being said, if you have a flat tappet cam, you might get modern oil and add your own additives.

I think you're overthinking this. I've ran 5w-30 in all my small motors that called for 30wt for decades now. Never had an engine break on me or oil related issues. There have been a million conversations about new rated oils in older engines and the general consensus has been that it's completely fine. The only time I've had an engine go bad was when I was a teenager and ran an engine dry.
Yeah very hard to find non detergent 30(aka chain saw lube) anywhere anymore at a decent price. I looked in Walmart this past week they use to carry their house but they only do the stuff from Briggs now that really thinks their shit is liquid gold. I stocked on some Castrol a few years ago but will have to resort to either Walmart or Lowe's soon if this doesn't pan an pay their exuberant price or wait for end of season clearance
oh btw the stuff you are sticking in there is loaded with detergents and will $%÷×your $hit up but hey it'll be clean lol
Yes! Recently most of the air-cooled engine manufacturers have updated their charts to reflect this.
Full synthetic 10W40, 10W30, 5W40, 5W30, 10W50 will all work.
There is heated debate at this time that using too thick of an oil causes accelerated engine wear on every start up and that the rings may actually seal better with a high grade thinner synthetic oil. TBD

All my small engines have been running for decades on normal motor oil. Given we know most engine wear happens during startup, I have 5w getting to everything faster than straight 30.
What engines made in the last 50 years mention using 30 wt exclusively? I have a mower from the 80s that calls for 5w-30/10w-30 or 30wt.
WHY doesn't SlickDeals remove dead/expired posts? It's so tiresome to sort through all that crap, get all excited about a great deal, then discover it's expired or not/no longer on sale. 😖

Mower engine has never been cleaner and much easier to start up on first pull due to the 5W.
I just use the soap pump bottle to pump out the oil and top up to the correct level ( no drain plug). Also use a few drops of stabil and techron for the mower fuel gallon jug. Stuff you have to do due to the corn crap they put into regular petrol.
Dumb to use straight 30W and not SD as it generally costs more

You want it cleaned out, ain't gonna do engine any good with carbon coating on any surface.
Carbon is good as a heat shield on space craft or soft carbon for pencils 👍
