Can someone smart tell me how many bags would equal a square yard?
This is volume, not surface. 2 cubic feet per bag. 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard. 14 bags (14x2=28) will be 1 cubic yard

What kind of mulch would be best near fruit trees? Want to kill grass and weeds under the tree but dont want toxins. Or should i be buying something else?

I get two seasons out of it, but the second year is admittedly rather crap looking, just tolerable.

Just bought 24 bags…

The mulch is more like shredded, not chips. The Scott's I used before were like actual wood chips vs the Lowe's mulch.
I got the Scott's this year and the Lowes last year. The Lowes mulch is much lower quality. Huge chunks of wood and lots of pieces of cloth and plastic and metal. I put down about 100 or so bags of the Scott's last week and it had none of that stuff in it, and it's a much finer quality than the Lowes.

I still think I'll just get it delivered from a local company next year though, because even with a 95 dollar delivery fee, I'd get the same amount of mulch (that's higher quality) for the same price.

This price looks to be fairly nationwide

Good deal...I need about 100 bags

If you need that much check local rock and mulch yards. They can deliver a large truck load cheaper than buying by the bag in many cases.

Also where I live you can get free mulch at the landfill. When people drop trees off they separate the hardwood and mulch it to save room. Charge to drop the tree off but give it away free after they grind and heat.

Not good. Maybe get 1-4 months on average. Will vary by sunlight and rain amounts.

This requires 8 cubic yards. We would have gone with bags but going for Cedar (or its smellyummy).

Home Depot has $3.33/bag right now for their Vigoro brand mulch. Won't that go lower soon? I seem to recall the HD Vigoro is a higher quality that the Lowes brand.
