Also, engineers are not always the final say on things, and that includes engineering things. There are bean counters, management, marketing, etc.
Most cars have 3 years or 36000 mile warranty on new cars. Hyundai and Kia bump that to 10 years or 100000 miles. Very few people will have issues with most cars before 36k miles. Hyundai and Kia have had oil burning issues before the 100k mark but good luck trying to do a warranty claim if your car starts burning oil.
Do what you want but there have been issues with relatively new cars burning oil because of low compression piston rings and extended oil changes. These rings can get gummed up with extended oil changes.
