It's one thing to be using a router at home that has outdated firmware, but choosing to purchase a NEW router that has not had a firmware update in a year and a half makes no sense.
Four cents too much.

I bought and returned it this week.

Biggest gripe was that anything on the Guest network (IOT devices, which we have ~20) can not be renamed or assigned a new icon, so half of my devices were just MAC addresses.

Connected Home Store is Linksys btw.

These are amazing routers. I've had mine for over a year (and the old Wireless AC version before that) and have had no issues. Best mesh network by far. It is easily controlled remotely via app or browser and you can split the bands for IOT devices.

Does this router not support virtual networks? Thought most modern routers had this. Should be easy to set up, if so.

If you are talking about vlans then no. Most consumer routers can not assign vlans

It does support virtual networks, they call them guest networks (many manufacturers do the same). His issue is that items on those guest networks can't be renamed to make them friendlier to identify.

Those of you who got this device, can it be configured and run locally with no cloud access at all? Is there a local configurator or something of that kind, or do you have to download an app, create account, and so on?

I had these at one point. They were incredibly disappointing and I couldn't wait to get rid of them. They were super hard to sell and I got very little for them.

They just didn't do that whole networking thing all that well and I routinely had to reboot them. They were very fiddly and mesh was constantly breaking.

Mx8000 is just a two pack of mx4200. So it should work with openwrt.
