Gold won't do you much good at the height of a crisis. That's when food, water, medical supplies, weapons, alcohol, tobacco, etc. will be the primary bartering tools. No crisis lasts for long, though, and when society stabilizes, the gold will help you get a head start in the new economy. Basically, if the US dollar falls apart, you can use your precious metals to buy whatever new currency replaces it.

If a major crisis never occurs, gold will very slowly climb in value, more or less matching inflation. It's a very safe investment, but with extremely low yield compared to traditional investment opportunities, so gold should only make up a small percentage of your investment portfolio (it's a financial final line of defense).

Exec membership gets 2% back, and Costco Citi card gets an additional 2% off. Plus you get the float on the credit card. No other dealer comes close.

Serious question, what's the point of collecting gold?

I grabbed one. I also grabbed a gold eagle same price. I did two separate orders. Used my Citi card. So 2% return so $92 next year that the wife will get in Dec or Jan I think. Cheaper than where I was buying even before the 2%.
The eagle one is 91.67%, not 99.99% gold, just so you know.

Personally, I don't collect. I buy it to get the aforementioned CC + exec rewards or hit SUB MSRs, and then offload to my local coin store. It's not a very volatile asset, so it's great for that.

Still contains 1 troy oz of gold... The total mass of the coin is greater, just so you know.

I haven't experienced that. What I've seen is buffalos are slightly more than eagles.
People like shinier things which is why buffalos have seem to have higher demand and higher premium… but if u separated out all the metals in each coin for their melt value, then of course the eagle has a higher melt value

So people buy this and then just hang on to it an then hope down the road they can sell it? Who buys these things third party for anywhere near this price?

I know from people selling wedding rings and stuff they buy it for $3000 and then can't sell it for more than $300.
This is bullion. Weight is weight.
Wedding rings will always command their value in weight, at a minimum. Not sure why this is confusing

Don't forget DVDs for when the streaming services go down. You'll be able to trade that for some beans.

But doesn't one of those coins also have silver and copper? It's like a glass of 99.9% single malt whisky and another with 92% of single malt whisky, 5% Tequila and 3% Vodka..

I love gold threads, better then motor oil threads. The oversimplification of a specific situation is comical.

I'll just pass it along to my god children. If you think a $2300 investment is a make or break situation you aren't in the proper income bracket anyways.

I did remember that but I thought that was issued as a Costco gift certificate at year end.

If my memory is accurate, and while that is still a decent deal, I prefer cash back in my pocket so I can spend it anywhere, but to each his/her own.

Plus, I would need to upgrade my membership to the tune of $60 additional per year, which would negate (roughly) the 2% back unless I bought two coins.

There is actually a way to buy AGE/AGB for below spot, and have 12-18 months to pay for them at 0% interest, but it does require a top notch credit score.

Eddie

P.S. The 2% back from the using your Citi Card is a good deal. I had forgotten about that so thanks for the reminder. Very useful to remember for big purchases like this. Plus, Costco does not charge a premium for using a CC like most dealers do.

Seriously. Bitcoin is much easier to hold & can't be debased.
