I never trusted this though. Is this a thing? I change when the light turns on. Mobil will also replace your engine if it fails. But good luck proving that too
Or it's due to CAFE standards to squeeze that .1MPG.

You can also check what viscosity the rest of the world uses, so you won't be wrong. Toyota recommends different viscosity in the US as compared to Japan and Australia. Same engine, same software, same everything, different recommendations.

Do they have 5w-30 available?
Yeah, they have the high mileage version, but not quite as cheap and sold individually.

They also have the high mileage version of the 0W-20 for the same $29.97 individually too.

Be careful with what your manual says. Many of today's cars use complex valve train's with passages that depend on the exact viscosity of the oil to flow at exact amounts to enable cam timings.

For American cars maybe but not Japanese cars

Keep beating the dead horse but it doesn't matter which brand you choose, as long as they didn't mix it with water and you're getting the correct viscosity your car calls for. What matter most is how often you change it. Just every 6 months or 3-5k miles and you'd be fine.

Are you trying to say that Japanese cars don't have complex valvetrains? or that Japanese cars with complex valvetrains don't require exact oil viscosity to operate?

Mileage may vary. Totally depends on engine/application/duty cycle. Pulling oil samples and sending them to a lab like Blackstone or Bureau Veritas is really the only sure fire way to know what is safe. Oil type isn't the only factor, the oil filter's micron rating, associated efficiency at that micron rating, and its overall dirt holding capacity are all important.

Motorcraft wins and Mobil 1 doesn't place so high. Anyway this guy is pretty great at testing stuff. Project Farm.

I have a 2012 Scion tc, car calls for 10k intervals and I had a 100k warranty so I used the dealers 10k oil changes for first 5 years, got to 100k and switched to amsoil signature oil for 15k intervals. But oil is so damn expensive now, that at 200k I just got Costco afe deal and did oil change to Mobil 1 afe 33 @ 6 quarts I was going to do it every 10k

Car has 2k on it now and it's running well. I decided to go ahead and order this deal 15 quarts of EP for my Scion I might stick with 10 or 15k don't know.

Was going to stay with afe but this oil claims it cleans engine instead of afe just reducing sludge. So why not.

I have 3 oem Toyota filters in garage they are 4 a piece, and now enough oil for next 3 oil changes too. That's like 28 dollars per change. I assume oil is good for years so no issue on worrying about that.

Now my question is, I just went back to oem filter since amsoil filters have been out of stock for my car. I wonder if I can push them to 15k I know Toyota rates them for 10k since that's what my car oci is.

I do burn about half a quart in 10k miles I think. Which works out perfect being 4.6qt oil change leaving .4 for top up at 5k
15k is crazy long IMO. I wouldn't go over 10k. I do my changes at 5-7.5k and the oil is so dirty and sheared down.

This! I remember Ford asked for 5w-20 in the same engine that previously had 5w-30. Those model years absolutely drank oil. 1qt/1k. I remember changing oil on some of those and literally a quart would come out lol. Almost bone dry.

It took about 2 oil changes to get everything out and bring the viscosity back up. Oil usage went to 1qt/5k miles. All to squeak out a miniscule mpg number to meet new standards. I wanna say it was somewhere around 2005-2010.

Agreed. While prices may be higher it is nowhere in the ballpark of replacing your engine because of oil failure. Spend the extra money on the extra oil change for peace of mind.

Oil change interval matters more than brand. Just follow manufacturer specs. The 3-5k guys are still living in the 70's. Most oil analysis results seem to come back the same: "you could have gone longer."

I currently use this stuff but my car calls for changing at 7500, so I'm switching to the Kirkland stuff. $80 for 4 5-quart jugs delivered right now. Often on sale at $30 for 2 5-quart jugs.

If I knew for certain I could go 20k on this oil I'd come back, but it's almost triple the manufacturer spec.

"Toyota uses Mobil 1"

No, Mobil paid to have their logo on manuals/filler caps possibly but dealers buy bulk oil and when you take it in for service unless you bring your own oil, unlikely you're getting Mobil 1. I bought some at the $63 price point cause 0w16 but I don't think Mobil 1 is anything special, ymmv.
Exxon/Mobil does make the Toyota branded genuine motor oil that you can buy from the dealer directly. With that said you are correct, most dealers will fill up your car with whatever brand they can get for their bulk tank.
