are these loud AF?
I have the HGST HC520 and from my experience, it's quieter than my WD red plus drives. Just don't expect these to be absolutely silent though.

What would be better - 16 10TB in RAID 6 or 10 16TB in RAID 6?
both have their pros and cons

16x10tb cons
  • takes up more power (imo actually matters on something with 24h uptime)
  • takes up more drive bays
  • more points of failure
10x16tb cons
  • more storage given up for parity (~32tb vs 20tb)

Pick your poison

Raid 10 is the answer 100% of the time. Of course, have a offline copy for a power surge or virus. If it sounds too good, it's because you need 200% of your needs to run.

Always run a full scan on the drive before copying your data.

I use Victoria and it takes around 1.35 hrs per TB. Doing this enabled me to confirm a couple of noisy drives I received and returned for replacement.

Yeh. I think the point is I could fill up 2tb in one dump. An another half the drive in months without even trying. 8 modern games alone is 1tb. An good luck not needing another of these by the end of the year if you make or edit media if you don't add any games. Also would be near pointless to buy a ssd for a media server that only holds 40 movies . Ssd are boot drives. These are storage drives

I'm looking to create a home backup solution to save my pictures mostly. Is two of these paired with Synology 422+ a good choice?

Let me attempt to save everyone some time:
1) Yes, these are used drives. If you don't like it, move along. You don't want anyone to actually try to refurbish these because they are welded shut to contain the helium. I'm guessing virtually zero third-party places can effectively service these.
2) For an extra $10-20, you can probably get another 2+TB on another SD here. This is the normal (good) price for a sale.
3) Yes, you'll get the full 5yr warranty from goharddrive. If you don't believe me (and you shouldn't), ask them directly
4) You may get a PWDIS drive, so be prepared to snip or tape that third pin, use a crimped molex connector, or use an enclosure, depending on your needs and if you have an older PSU that doesn't power up the drive correctly because it doesn't support PWDIS.
5) Yes, it IS a lot of data to potentially lose. But if you actually care about your data, it shouldn't matter since you have backups and are potentially putting this into an array where RAID/parity means you also have fault tolerance and (hopefully) reporting.
6) Just like with any new (to you) drive, use software to run a full surface test of the drive. Something like the older WD Data Lifeguard will suffice here, but some people prefer HD Sentinel, badblocks, H2testw, or the stuff built into their array solution (like unraid preclear or Stablebit Scanner).
7) Yes, there have been better deals in the past. Give us the keys to the DeLorean or don't bother posting your humble-brags.
8) I probably forgot some stuff, but these are pretty much the things that should IMO be listed at the beginning of every HDD thread because it gets old real fast.
Do these still carry the 5 year even though sold through Newegg? That was the only reason I was looking at ebay for SPD/GHD

I'm about to do 3 of them in raid 5 for the same thing. Just ordered!

This is a favorite, because it has a good sized cooling fan.
Yup, I have one of these actually and have recommended it before. Sabrent generally makes decent stuff and this model falls in that category.

Thanks. Any suggestions for multi bay ?
Depends on a few things - what your plan is, if you need RAID, budget, if you need to pass individual drive information to a host, etc.

Having said that, in increasing order of price and maybe also build quality: MediaSonic ProBox (multiple models), TerraMaster (multiple models), Synology (multiple models).
There's also the DIY route using something like OMV, unRaid, TrueNAS Scale, or even Stablebit DrivePool + snapraid on a Windows box.

HD Sentinel, badblocks, H2testw, Which be better? I have used HD Sentinel to "repair" a drive and was impressed but wondering about the others. Thanks!
They're just different, I don't attribute any ranking to them beyond maybe someone being more comfortable with one interface vs the other.
Not the answer you probably wanted, but that's my opinion.

I got a 12TB pair from a similar goharddrive deal a couple weeks ago, and they were PWDIS drives, but they each came with an adapter to bypass PWDIS. Not sure if they all come with adapters but maybe something to be aware of
I don't think they all do. Someone in another thread bought 2, neither would power up, and it turned out to be a PWDIS issue. The said they didn't receive any cables.
Meanwhile someone else who ordered just before them did get cables. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes. All goharddrive "outlets" carry the 5yr, at least from feedback we've gotten from people in those various threads. Just reach out to goharddrive directly to confirm.
