I'd advise buying Target gift cards online for security. Last time Target had the 5% off sale during the holidays, 1 of my physical gift cards worth $200 was drained to $0 immediately after I purchased it. It took weeks to recover the funds back from Target.
Still have $300 giftcard from December giftcard sale π£ every time I compare price, Walmart usually cheaper and I have Walmart + with free shipping so I go with Walmart
They are gonna soon roll out "the target plus". Might be an option for u to use up the gc

I used up the $500 I bought in December, so I might go for this again. Of course, in December I also got 5% back with Discover and some other Target Circle offer, so it was a pretty sweet deal.
You're essentially getting 5% off because the 5% discount using red card isn't applied when you're using gift card. The 5% red card discount is applied only if the item is in excess of gift card amount.
For example, you buy a $100 gift card, you paid $90 and a savings of $10. When you buy an item that is $100 with gift card or circle card, you use the $100 gift card which you paid $90 for, or just $95 using red card.
Not really accurate description at the front, though your example is correct. It's10% off--but only 5% more than normal for those that have a Redcard (now, I think, called a Target Circle Card). It's still 10% off listed prices. But people have to decide if it's worth it to prepay for an additional 5% off what they might normally receive.
I'm not sure I can trust target gift cards anymore. My kids were given $25 gift cards for Christmas. When they were t to go use them in the store, one of them wouldn't work. I found out the card was emptied at a store 60 miles away about a week after it was purchased. Target support did replace the card but also included a note that it was a one time courtesy. Maybe one time they should recognize the failures in their gift card system. I use to buy $500 worth of cards when they had these discounts, but no longer will I do this.

Totally agree. Online gift cads have become a high risk ! I learned the hard way with a online Maggianos , Cash Card (site) and P F Chang`s online cards that were hacked. Never again will I buy an online card in this crooked world. And trying to deal with the companies to rectify can be a hassle.
probably should read the other post carefully. that person says to buy the online GC for better security. you are recommending the opposite.

However, if you pay with a payment method other than Red Card, you get 1% back in Target Circle rewards. In a $100 spend scenario, the Red Card gets you a 5% discount. In the 10% off gift card scenario, you get $101 in store credit for $90. That is a ~10.89% discount for a 5.89% premium over using Red Card.
Edit to add that this does not include any credit card cash back, such as Amex Blue Cash Everyday that gives 3% back on online purchases. In that case, you would get $101 in store credit for $87.3 out of pocket for a 13.56% discount.
