Nearly all tripods sold today have center columns, so… just about everybody buying tripods buys one with a center column. You don't have to extend it if you don't want. I've never used a $2,000 Gitzo tripod, but maybe it's a lot sturdier with its center column than your tripod.

many higher end, (let's just say $200+) tripods don't come with center columns, they come with bowls on top for quicker leveling and more stability. Center columns come on cheap tripods because it is cheaper to make the tripods taller with the one center section, than making all 3 legs longer. The better tripods with center sections are made to flip around to get the camera lower to the ground. Professional photographers who depend on their tripods to be dead solid will shy away from the center column since it does add one more chance of the tripod shaking.

That being said, I do own this tripod, and it has become my favorite. It is very stable for it's size and weight. I do not own these heads, so I can't comment on those.

HAHA I guess you don't know much about tripods!!! First why buy a tripod if you're not going to be able to extend it to its max height! Secondly, there are a TON of tripods without the center column that are NOT GITZO lol! A little google search will prove that! Lastly, You OBVIOUSLY must be a rookie photographer since MY TRIPOD is designed for landscape photography with the ability to put it in moderately running water and extends to 82 inches high...and if you say you don't know why anyone would need a tripod that high you DEFINITELY don't know anything about photography! LOL

I don't need an 82" tripod, but go ahead and do whatever makes you happy.
