So I finally opened mine from a previous deal. For the money it's a decent value but I'm really disappointed by the magnesium block. It has no flint striker on it. You absolutely need a second tool to generate the sparks for it.

Actually some people prefer not to carry lighter fluid on them for various reasons. This is also a leave it and forget it set up since you dont have to worry about Lighter Fluid leaking out or evaporating over time.

Yes, but this kit (in concept) seems more geared to the bugout bag or hiking which you might not need the lighter for 1 or 10 or 1000 years. The lighter might not work when you need it most so having fire redundant fire starting methods which cannot 'expire' or could be damaged by rough handling is important. Also butane also gets pretty useless in colder temps while lighter fluid likes to evaporate rather quickly.

Yeah but its not nearly as fun! Also you don't get a merit badge for starting a fire with a lighter.

More seriously, when you most need to get and stay warm is when it is wet, windy, and cold - it may be impossible to start a fire at all. The best way to be prepared for extreme elements or "survival" scenario is to bring extra clothes and learn how to stay warm without a fire at all. But bringing a lighter is a good idea too.

This says flint rod and striker tool. Does it have the little black cylinder thing?
