Hi Slickdealers! Autumn

We're back with some more weekly staff picks awards. We had a lot of fun going through various threads and finding some of our favorite posts. It was hard to just pick a few. From helpful, to funny to just plain out there, there were a lot to choose from.

What's in it for the winners of these highly esteemed awards? They are all going to receive a $5 digital Amazon Gift Card! We will be emailing the prizes shortly. Please make sure the address you have associated with your Slickdeals account is up to date.

Thanks to everyone who keeps posting and being part of our community. Y'all make me laugh daily, buy things I don't need and learn things I never knew I needed to know. See you again soon!

Super DIYer Award

Quote from iota :
I have purchased and installed multiple Pioneer units from eBay seller HIGHSEER which I suspect is also the seller of these items on home depot.

The pioneer units are great. They are nearly identical to other pre-charged mini splits so I suspect that they are all made in the same factory.

Installation is easy if you are a DIY'er enough to know how to drill a hole all the way through an exterior wall and how to handle wiring up basic 220v electrical. I imagine that the cost to have a pro install would be $500-$1000 depending on your area.

My oldest Pioneer unit has been running for 7 years and started to not cool as much. I had an HVAC guy come out and he said it was low on refrigerant and added some. I would suspect that my DIY install resulted in a minor slow leak somewhere but otherwise my units have all run great without issue. We use them in outbuildings on our large property.

There are multiple versions / editions of wifi controllers available for these units, the latest ones which use the Midea Air app seem to be the best. You can get parts and controllers on Amazon or Highseer eBay.

Install a line hider as you do the initial install or you'll find it's a pain to do later. Also don't forget when measuring your line length that you need to go through the wall and have extra to tuck in around the indoor and outdoor units; a 16' line set should be enough for anything on a standard house as long as the outdoor unit is on the other side of the wall as the indoor unit. You can shorten the line if needed.

You'll need a vacuum pump and an adapter. Adapter can be found on Amazon (forgive me I forgot the size but I want to say 5/16?) and vacuum pump can be rented or borrowed from an auto parts store for free or cheap.

The units come pre charged with refrigerant (Freon or whatever you call it locally). After you connect the indoor and outdoor unit with the supplied line and it's all tight, you attach a vacuum pump to a little service port on the outdoor unit and run it to basically draw out any moisture or air in the line. Run it for 4x as long as the install manual tells you to.

After that you unhook the vacuum pump, turn a valve which releases the stored refrigerant inside of the outdoor unit into the line, and you're ready to go.

These things rule

They Did the Math Award (multiple recipients)

Quote from Specboy :
Batteries won't need to be replaced in 5-10 years. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are good for 10 years of full discharge every single day.... And at that 10-year point, they still have 80% of their capacity left. So if you ran this every other day to near empty, and recharged to full, you'd get 20 years out of this battery and still have 80%.
Quote from _Dutch_ :
Redeeming a GamePass Core code when you already have an active GamePass Ultimate subscription will convert the time on the card into GPU at a rate of 3:1, meaning that a one-year Core code will turn into an extra four months of Ultimate. Redeeming a GamePass Core code without an active GamePass Ultimate subscription, then converting to GamePass Ultimate will give you a better conversion rate of 3:2, meaning that you'll get eight months of Ultimate.

You can have up to 36 months of GamePass Core, or three one-year codes, banked at a time. The browser page to join GamePass Ultimate can be found here [xbox.com]. If this is your first time converting to GPU, the conversion cost is $1, although some returning customers have reported getting the $1 rate as well.

The standard monthly cost of Ultimate is $16.99 plus tax; buying three Core codes from this deal and then converting to Ultimate will give you two years for $147.97, which is a minimum discount of $259.79 or 63% from the monthly rate.

What Did You Say Your Hobby Was Again? Award

Quote from HappyAccident :
This card is great if you want to play with local language models. Tired of GPT refusing to answer your questions about how to dispose of that dead body in your freezer? Run your own local model that has been 'un-aligned' and it will let you know exactly which brand of acid to get at the hardware store to remove that pesky problem. All you need a boatload of VRAM to run it.

I Heart Borg Award

Definitely Understands Cats Award

Quote from DJ Dale :
This will end up being a plant stand while my cat prefers to tear up my couch instead.

Or just give it a used box and its happy as a pig in mud.....

Some Like It Hot Award

Quote from iDroid :
I don't have this particular one, but ones that look pretty much exactly like them in black that I got on Amazon. I'd say they're not going to last you more than 1-3 months with regular usages. The lid will typically break first at the corners. The container themselves usually last slightly longer before the corners/lips breaks.

If you're using it to store mostly cold food and just rinse them off afterward, they can last quite a while. I think it's the constant heating and cooling with regular washing that wears them out fast.

Hydration For All Award

Quote from komondor :

The description says cat but my small dogs also drink from it. The big plus is that the water is filtered, before it is pumped. This keeps things much cleaner, I have several other water bowls etc, all of them allow saliva etc to either reach the pump or get clogged in front of the pump.

i have been using my comma 3 since christmas of 2021. over 90,000 miles on it and i love it. this is for the newer comma 3x.

i have it on my 2020 Lexus UX250h and my 2022 RX450H

it takes driving to level 2 autonomous driving.

it will keep you in lane without having hands on the wheel.
it will keep you in lane when you are braking
it will keep you in lane during stop and go traffic.

it will do stop and go traffic. you can have both hands on a big mac in traffic and the car will start and stop.

FYI i bought mine when it was $2500 plus 200 for the cable. $1050 right now is cheap AF.

There are clones out there but i read constantly of failures. mine has worked flawlessly.
I run sunny pilot fork.

You dont need to drive a lot to need this or appreciate this device. its one of those things, once you have it and use it you'll never want to go back LOL.

The Real Deal is in the Comments Award

Save 15 cents by buying "used- like new" from the Amazon Warehouse!

Thank You For Being A Friend Award

Quote from GulllyBoY :
I feel really sorry for MOD here on this thread. And they are doing great cleaning up.

Watch Expert Award

Quote from babygdav :
A decent price for new given that you can typically find them used in very good condition or better in ebay for $30-50 everyday. The GA100 series is very popular and tons used.

Just picked up a blackout colour version for $30 used three weeks ago, which is 50% off this deal new and in line with what you ought to pay.

Ie. Used items ought to be priced 30-50% off new, so if new goes much more than used, bad deal on the new.

....

Keep in mind this model in inverse lcd (white characters, black background) is easy to read in daylight outdoors, but drop the light level indoors or at night and it's difficult to read the digital display. Total darkness with only the built in light and forget it.

It's primarily for the analog dial in lower light levels, and the auto light on wrist raise is bright and works like the same feature in Protrek models. Led light is bright enough, once eyes adjust to total darkness, to see four, five feet out. Not a flashlight by any means, but enough to see your way to your glasses, light switch, or room exit.

I went for the blue on inverse black with all black case for the stealth look. Tons of bands and cases you can buy to swap for a unique look, too. Those with white bands and cases need the swapability simply because those don't age well with dirt, etc.

There's Always Money in the Banana Stand Award

Brotherly Love Award

Quote from PlumpPumpkin :
My cousin had chickens. She fed the chickens chicken. Seriously. It's wrong in so many ways, but also bloody hilarious.

I Don't Mean To Pry But... Award

Quote from mlj2015 :
I'm a DIYer and have never been like, "Oh man, what I need is a giant pry bar." But, I like the deal and got one. They can be handy for many things I suppose. Never know when you'll need to pry something.
VR Pro Award

Quote from KingTaco :
I just got a Quest 2 headset, the used ones are on a fire sale post Christmas. A better face cushion and head strap are absolute musts! If your face is even a little broad the default strap and pads are going to dump all the weight on your cheekbones.

So a Quest 2 is still perfectly serviceable and as long as you're content wiring it to a PC for Steam link it should be a good headset for years to come. That said, VR is still largely just a novelty and it's such a crapshoot figuring out which games have a control layout that you'll find comfortable. There is so much useless outdated info for getting things set up properly because this headset and all the software have had years of updates. Also the community around VR in general isn't the most pleasant.

My recommendations for apps is a pretty short list.

Resident Evil 4: It's the most impressive VR game. Nobody has done better yet. This is THE demo game that shows what VR can be for gaming, and it's a very complete version of a game that people have loved and re-purchased since the days of the GameCube. This version is worth the full $40 asking price, though it will go on sale for less.

4XVR for locally stored videos. I got my Quest 2 thinking I'd lay in a hammock using it as a video player. This is the only video player I've found with a mode that lets you lay down and re-orient the screen so you don't have to be seated upright to watch. It also has the most compatibility with different codecs for audio and video. Currently it's free.

Immersed is the productivity app. It's "free" but they really want you to buy a subscription. This is the only desktop streaming app I've seen so far that allows you to display multiple screens. And they allow a pass through cutout so you can see your mouse/keyboard.

Moss and Moss 2 are ADORABLE platformers where you control an incredibly cute mouse character through a whimsical fantasy world shown as lovely storybook dioramas and from time to time you will directly interact with the world to move an obstacle to help your mouse traverse the world. It's a shame these games are VR exclusive because they could have such broader appeal for a wider audience.

Skyrim VR is a great way to wring EVEN more playtime out of that game, and it has an impressive range of play comfort options for VR. Fallout 4 VR does the same thing for Fallout 4. Two very strong options for meaty gaming experiences.

I strongly recommend checking out all the reviews and discussions for any Steam VR game that appeals to you before buying. A lot of games were made with the Vibe controls in mind which often means no analog stick support, which still works but I find them much more annoying when played on a wired headset.

Love love this series! I know it must take time but please keep producing these - both the comments and the creative award titles are awesome.

Also please consider a March Madness style bracket competiton at the end of the year for most memorable SD post in 2024. Winner gets celery, an HP Touchpad and a signed copy of Selma's autobiography "Bot? Not!"

Edit: So many typos...
