This has a significantly better CPU, but you give up 1TB of SSD space and trade down from DDR5 RAM to the older DDR4. I personally wouldn't pick the lesser CPU, especially for photo and video editing.

DDR4 vs. DDR5 is a non-issue for most people. Going down from 2TB storage to 1TB storage may or may not matter for your needs (but an SSD is easy to add or replace). The CPU is the one big difference. You can't unsee an i7 at this price.

I think i7 is a better choice

and I don't think you can do much upgrade on oem HP PC

Costco Item 1779682 [costco.com]
I don't know if this is regional, but it is showing OOS for me. I may be wrong, but I feel like it was already showing OOS for me a few days ago.
Even no mention of the $300 discount on the product page.

Spent $786 inflation-adjusted for a Lenovo i7-4700, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, and iGPU eleven years ago. This rig would come out to about $1100. That's 24GB RAM and a GPU for $314. Not too shabby if you have a Costco membership and want to deal with perhaps the worst tech company on the planet.

Google Gemini says, "Yes, the NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4060 graphics card with 8 GB GDDR6 will support the LG Ultrafine 5K display.
The RTX 4060 has DisplayPort 1.4a outputs which can support resolutions up to 8K at 60Hz with DSC (Display Stream Compression). LG Ultrafine 5K displays typically use a resolution of 5120 x 2880 which is well within the capabilities of the RTX 4060.
For optimal performance, double check the specific LG Ultrafine 5K model you have and verify its port requirements to ensure compatibility with the RTX 4060's outputs."

Showing as $1,299 for me.

Edit: Refreshed the page and the -$300 is back.

Are there any open NVMe M.2 slots in this? I got my son an HP "gaming" PC a few years ago, but inside the case is pretty compact and doesn't leave any room for additional upgrades.

The most you can hope for is a 3.5" bracket. Luckily, 2.5" SATA SSDs can be mounted virtually anywhere with double stick tape.

What I would recommend is to not sleep on external storage, whether it be a full NAS or just an external enclosure.

NVME is great for a primary drive, but the cost/performance ratio staggers pretty quickly when you start using them for non-specific auxiliary tasks.

Thanks for the info. The better CPU is appealing but I do need the 2TB storage. If I'm reading the spec sheet right, it looks like this does not have an available slot for a second SSD. When you say it's easy to add an SSD, do you mean an external one?

This is a pretty good price for what you're getting. I dont' think you could easily build this with equivalent specs for under the $1000. Plus Costco extra warranty is good bonus.
I don't know how great HP OEM builds are but on paper it looks like a good deal. Nice that it has 32GB of memory too.

The full HP spec sheet on it from HP's site does say that it has 2 M.2 slots. So if thats right there should be a free M.2 slot. EDIT : OK so based on 2 reports there is not a open M.2 slot. There is one M.2 used by the 1TB drive and then the other M.2 is occupied by the wireless card. There is however a x1 PCIe slot so you could use an adapter to put a M.2 drive in your PCIe slot.
Example of such an adapter : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCLHQV43/
I don't know if that adapter part is any good, just randomly grabbed one to show what kind of device.

Also says there is one 3.5" bay
"Expansion slots
2 M.2; 1 PCIe x16; 1 PCIe x1"
"Internal drive bays
One 3.5" available"
