My favorite city in the world (Kaohsiung). I almost went back to get my doctorate just 8 months ago. I miss that place.

I was just in Taoyuan city and hsinchu area. Taiwan is a beautiful place and I can't wait to go back. The ~14 hour flight from San Francisco was brutal.

Taiwan is relatively safe. people there are usually friendly and empathetic. also probably too timid to do anything outrageous as long as you do not appear weak. now, if you're a young girl drunk at night walking around in the alleyway, then you're probably in danger no matter where in the world you are. I consider it to be safer than Japan and south Korea, though I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of these three as travel destinations for a young girl traveling alone.

I consider that there's a different set of dangers to look out for in Taiwan, mostly regarding food safety. the food is tasty but the gutter oil scandal never received closure, and everyone I talk to has just accepted it to be part of their diet. other than that, I don't know of any dangers lurking there. not as clean as Japan, but that isn't a source of danger, just discomfort.

finally, if you've been critical of China, I would advise skipping on this deal, since it passes through Hong Kong.
