But you don't get that satisfying hiss from a battery powered one.

SHTF I might want a dual liquid fuel that will run off gasoline. Was running low at a music festival and topped off from some random RV owner. SHTF I'll have to trade for bullets instead of a beer.
Can't have too many supplies like this when SHTF

Do these serve a purpose anymore with current batteries lasting as long as they do. Bulky and heavy, and need a propane tank to run.

I just got a rechargeable LED to replace my dual fuel lantern for everyday camp use. BUT I will never get rid of it and would trust it over the battery powered LED off grid or in an emergency any day of the week.

Honestly, at $21 and you can find the propane tank for $4 or $5,, for under $30 not a bad thing to have with you camping, if a fellow camper needs a light and they keep it for $30 no biggie.
Or when the SHTF, having a couple extra lights won't be a bad thing. Possible barter. https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...t-rolleyes.gif

I am in for 2 , thank you OP

True but you do get near infrared (for those interested) from an LED (regardless of color temperature).

Personally, I like the "warmer" color.

Louisiana boy and hardcore hunter and fisherman all my life. My Dad, grandfather, uncles and everyone else here have used Coleman lanterns for generations. I have many myself, but the last few years I've switched over to battery powered lanterns.

They provide just as much, if not more light. They are much faster to operate as you just turn them on. No gas to pour in a little funnel or try not to spill, no mantles to worry about keeping extras, no hot as heck lantern to worry about when I pack up and head home, no having to prime it and light it, etc. Plus the led lanterns use so little energy, the rechargeable batteries last for days in these things. With my solar battery charger, I can even have a set recharging during the day on a camping trip.

I won't ever get rid of my fuel lanterns as some have been passed down to me from Paw Paw and my dad, but I don't use them much anymore. Oh and one more benefit of the battery lanterns is they are more compact and lighter. Also no glass to worry about breaking, so just all around a better product. I use 3 to light up the entire camp area like it's daylight.
