I used to believe the same thing, I was ready to give up my GoPro Hero 7. But then I found a video on youtube saying that somehow the battery and the SD card might be the reason of the problem. I bought some original GoPro batteries on Ebay and used the recommended SD card and all of the problems went away. Haven't had a problem with mine since.
I bought a used Hero 8 off FB Marketplace and it came with 3 GoPro brand batteries which work great. I put in a MicroSD with the right specs and it's been wonderful. I recently learned that I can use a battery bank with sufficient output (I believe at least 2.4A) for much longer battery life. Now I'm curious to put it to the test to see if it overheats while sitting still just recording without wind cooling.

This may not relevant but I want to buy a camera to record in my cooking class that I want to record the whole session without the hassle of using my iPhone constantly (and maybe interrupted if someone called). The GoPro is overkilled and also the overheat issue. Any recommendation?
Hello, i find my self needing a variety of cameras for different things so have done some research. I personally think this go pro at this price is your best bet.
Another option with some cool options is the dji osmosis pocket 2.(new 3 is very expensive) it has a moving Timelapse option which i have used for cooking.
Or you could get a separate phone that is designated for your video. For example i needed devices connected too internet for streaming, so we got a few old i phones, that we only use for that purpose.

I've got an 11 and it stops recording all the time when i'm dirtbiking. I have a Sandisk Extreme micro sd, the enduro batteries... i do a fresh in-camera sd card format each time. There's no reason it should be doing this. Big time annoying.

GoPro cameras are known for shutting down due to heat. When it shuts off, it gives you zero clue it stopped writing to the card, at times, even the LCD is working.

I live in S. Florida and during summer it is a pain to record anything longer than 20min at 4K. Camera overheats and you lose footage.

When you lose footage, the file is corrupted, it does not close the session of writing to the card. So, it is even a question if you get the prior footage based on what settings you chose, how it breaks down the recording in smaller files.

And it is not just one single unit. It is not one single year. It is every year, every model. I have 3 myself. The only reason I have it, I use it for scuba, it cools being in the water, so, not an issue. But if you plan to record outside in heat, just know of this shortcoming.

In fact, it a very well known issue. Please google. "gopro overheats" and similar keywords.
All action cameras are limited in high-temperature conditions. DJI suffers the same. Mostly siting still is the problem. If you are biking or stick it on a car when there is airflow, It won't overheat in most cases.

It's a good deal, but it's worth splurging a bit more for the GP 12...

Yeah I tried out two GP 12 Black, and they both STILL overheated (as compared to my 8) whenever I'm recording in higher than maybe 75*F temps. I'm keeping a lookout for the DJI Action 4 now. I really wanted to stay with the GoPro brand….but I'm just sick and tired of the overheating issues
I have DJI Action 3 and it does same thing, except it stops recording without overheating, just randomly. Also to note, their android app is not available through google store, it can only be sideload installed from an apk file.

The higher resolution and frame rate you use will cause excessive heat. Especially if there's no airflow around it. If you can lower the frame rate or the resolution or better yet both. You will have a better chance of the camera running out of battery LONG before it can over heat. This has been my experience
That has been my experience too. I've been setting it at 1080. At 4k, it'll overheat after 10-20 mins.

Sadly I bought my Hero8 for this price a year ago 😒.
