GoPro cameras are known for shutting down due to heat. When it shuts off, it gives you zero clue it stopped writing to the card, at times, even the LCD is working.

I live in S. Florida and during summer it is a pain to record anything longer than 20min at 4K. Camera overheats and you lose footage.

When you lose footage, the file is corrupted, it does not close the session of writing to the card. So, it is even a question if you get the prior footage based on what settings you chose, how it breaks down the recording in smaller files.

And it is not just one single unit. It is not one single year. It is every year, every model. I have 3 myself. The only reason I have it, I use it for scuba, it cools being in the water, so, not an issue. But if you plan to record outside in heat, just know of this shortcoming.

In fact, it a very well known issue. Please google. "gopro overheats" and similar keywords.

That's been my biggest fear.

I need a camera that can work in high heat AND not shut off. It's why I have t upgraded from my 8.

Yeah I tried out two GP 12 Black, and they both STILL overheated (as compared to my 8) whenever I'm recording in higher than maybe 75*F temps. I'm keeping a lookout for the DJI Action 4 now. I really wanted to stay with the GoPro brand….but I'm just sick and tired of the overheating issues

This may not relevant but I want to buy a camera to record in my cooking class that I want to record the whole session without the hassle of using my iPhone constantly (and maybe interrupted if someone called). The GoPro is overkilled and also the overheat issue. Any recommendation?

I used to believe the same thing, I was ready to give up my GoPro Hero 7. But then I found a video on youtube saying that somehow the battery and the SD card might be the reason of the problem. I bought some original GoPro batteries on Ebay and used the recommended SD card and all of the problems went away. Haven't had a problem with mine since.

The higher resolution and frame rate you use will cause excessive heat. Especially if there's no airflow around it. If you can lower the frame rate or the resolution or better yet both. You will have a better chance of the camera running out of battery LONG before it can over heat. This has been my experience
