At this point, I recommend getting a 2nd gen Tablo instead. You can still buy them directly from Tablo's website [tablotv.com] or find them on eBay. As with any OTA DVR, you should experiment with attaching an antenna directly to your TV, to see what channels you can get, before investing in additional equipment. Websites, like antennaweb.org [antennaweb.org], can give you a rough idea though.

Yeah, the 4th Gen had a rough launch. The apps to actually use it weren't really ready yet. (They decided to make new apps. The old ones still work for the previous generation models.) The Apple TV app is currently in sign-up-required beta testing.

Why do you recommend the 2nd gen over the 4thgen for the same price? Sounds like they fixed the app issue, so is there a hardware issue with the 4th?

I'm surprised to hear that there are so many complaints about it. I just love mine. I use the apps on Roku and Google TV platform. Only issue I had was on Roku when some stations did not resize to use the whole screen, but lately seems they have taken care of it.
Plus the iOS and Android app make it really easy to watch something.

Agreed. I really like mine too. I got mine for $80 at Best Buy when it was regularly priced at $99. Since it uses WiFi, I have my Mohu Leaf antenna taped to my window and get good reception. Now I can get the same channels on my basement TV with the single antenna. It's a pretty cool setup. It took a bit to get it synced to my router, but since then, it's been good. I would highly recommend it. I moved to this after Google dropped support for my Channel Master Stream+.

Sorry for the delay. The reason I advise against the gen. 4 models is not a hardware issue. It's that support was removed for the web app and for the community made apps used for exporting recordings. Also the 4th gen. models don't support the "Tablo Connect" feature for watching remotely. It has worked well for some Roku owners but not others. You can read about the various issues people have had on the official Tablo Community Forums [tablotv.com].

I did have issues for 3-4 days after the recent Roku update but now it works even better

For the missing Tablo connect , my devices are always home with OpenVPN
