If you look at the blade you'll see either one or two men on the logo. The "One-Man" blades are thinner stock and made in Brazil and Spain. The "Two-Man" are thicker stock and made in Germany. Two other good choices (I use them both) are Sabatier knives from France and Grohmann knives from Pictou Nova Scotia, Canada.

I didn't read the reviews but by looking at the product listing alone I can see this is a bad deal. Only 3 of the 17 pieces would be of any use to most people (chef knife, utility knife and paring knife). The rest is just fluff and wasted space.

There is no information about them other than the images. The knives appear to be a single piece of steel with the handle anodized or shellacked for color. As knife steel, it's probably okay; it doesn't look like one of their serrated designs like the Eversharp. But the bolster is a monster and will immediately interfere with sharpening and those one-piece designs are aways a question mark regarding balance since you don't know what, if anything, is inside the handle for weight..

Henckels make fine knives, but in their attempt to market sets to all price points they have designed some pretty crappy ones. But it's the design that determines quality, not where they're made. The 8" pro chef knife made in China is just as good as a Wusthof Classic. There's literally no difference.

This set though? I'd keep looking.

So the cheap brand should be Henckel while the quality brand is Henckels as in plural.

the french sabatier profile is maybe between a true japanese chef's knife (got a little curve but they like a long flat stretch on that for push and/or pull cuts) and a german chef knife (round rocking cuts are possible and it doesn't mean you can't push or pull cut, just takes a little different or varying angles on the push/pull sliding for optimal technique)

Yeah, I was about to buy a single Henckels for $80 and seen this pop up on Alerts. Glad I didn't pull the trigger. This set, everywhere, has less than 4 stars.

I'm a 2 knife guy, and my old Henckles was lost in Mt recent move. And while I'm fine with using a 11in Filet knife on everything, it's too flexible for a lot of things. (Every spatchcock a chicken with a filet knife after your wife almost killed you for using her fabric scissors? It's exactly what you might think it would be. Lol.)

Thanks for the info. I had just thought they were all made in Germany.

I found this article to be educational and sounds reasonable explaining & suggesting different knife brands including some Henckels.

This isn't actually true, 1 man logo is Henkel Knives (Budget line owned by Zwilling) 2 man logo is Zwilling knives(high end line also owned by zwilling.) About 80% of the Zwilling blades are made in Germany or Japan(The two prefered mnf'ers) About 20% of the Henkel blades are made in Germany or Japan. Both have Forged and stamped blades. You really have to research the exact line of knives to find out where they are made.

I was recently educated that most Americans want German steel over Japanese steel, as we typically need thicker blades.

irish and german about equal I believe, however since angles saxons and jutes came from northern germany and southern denmark, from there to angle-land, and then to America, it's really correct that the largest group has german heritage. and dutch/scandinavian/frankish it all germanic
