It looks nice and all, the OLED screen is stunning, but in typical Asus fashion it runs really loud and hot. G-helper couldn't even help it. Plus the screen wobble pissed me off. It's not as bad as some of the YT reviews I've seen, but I know it's enough to annoy a lot of people. Plus ram is soldered, can't upgrade it at all.

If this was the 4080 version with the better cooling solution that they skimped on with this 4070 model then I would be tempted for sure, but not with this as it is. Way overpriced.
Heat: it stays very cool to the touch on the keyboard where your hand/arm is. I don't monitor temps because frankly as long as it's not shutting down I don't care.

Noise: no worse or better than a G14. I didn't mind the noise. I mean who doesn't wear headphones when gaming? But I'm telling you with these speakers you don't even need them.

The vapor chamber might be a little quieter but you're not going to upgrade for that (at least I don't recommend it) - you're going to upgrade for the 4080 and 32GB RAM.

If the specs work for you, don't be worried about heat/noise. My G14 feels like lava is about to spew from it at times. I am pretty sure the G16 feels cooler to the touch due to the aluminum chassis that naturally dissipates heat better.

Yes you can spend $300 more and get a Legion Pro 7i with 4080 and get about 50-60% better performance or more in games. The tradeoff is it's about 2 pounds heavier with a worse screen. Legions have excellent keyboards and although they switched to plastic for the trackpad this year, reviews say its fine. Speakers supposedly very good on the Legion as well which is important to me. But I know for a fact they're extremely good on the G16.

So yeah, you're paying for the size/weight and the screen on the G16. Everything else, you're far better off with the Legion. Is the screen worth it? Honestly outside of gaming probably not. OLED is great and all but it's not the end game. Text still looks best on standard subpixel layouts - which is not a fault of OLED, it's Windows poor handling of the situation.

But the G16 is definitely THE MacBook of the PC gaming world - more-so than Razer Blade IMO because of size and weight alone.

The Legion is what your rational brain wants but the G16 is what your heart wants.
Hundy or so more you could probably research and find a 4080… 30 percent faster

Yeah saw both the 14 and 16 inch versions in store at a best buy. The wobble was pretty noticeable and irritating enough to make it feel super cheap, which it's, you know, not cheap.

I wanna see a 4080 at this price. I like the laptop, but Nvidia decision to cripple the 4070 (compared to last gen) makes the card hard to justify a purchase in this price range. If I wanted a midrange card, plenty of 4060s are available at sub $1000.

Other than the gpu the laptop does look very nice tho, I still have the g15 2021 going strong.

Every single Lenovo I've owned (3 total, legion 5 included) has died prematurely on me. Heck that. Brand is dead to me.

I actually prefer mini LED over OLED. I also like 14-in, I'll probably grab a 2023 g14 4090 and just suck the price up.

It does, I own one. vRam is another part where nVidia crippled 40 series of cards on laptops. 4080 only comes with 12. They force you to pay premium for 4090 to get 16 now.

It's funny that you mention the legion pro 7i, which I returned last year. Maybe my brain works different, but I have championed oled for years and only "settled" for the legion pro because the lack of oled gaming laptops then. I had poor experiences with regular gaming laptops in the past, which the legion pro was the spitting image of, but of course the Internet kept on saying it was amazing, the screen was amazing, the sound was amazing, the software was amazing. And everything was a complete lie. I probably will just get the g16 once my credit card arrives and try it out, but the Internet has been utterly useless for this model and for most laptops in general. I am still pretty bitter that multiple YouTube and website reviews claimed the silent mode on the msi ge78hx was the quietest in the field. Reality? Even the msi software reports 3000rpm on idle doing absolutely nothing. It's literally the same loudness a legion pro makes playing a light video game on balanced, but far worse since it ramps up and down. I honestly think it's a giant conspiracy where everyone is drunk on some koolaid. This will be my last attempt.
Legion 7i is the nicest gaming laptop I've ever owned. Sounds like you're expecting a silent gaming out of a gaming laptop and that's not possible, you need a desktop for that. Reviews and internet is fine, it's just you having unrealistic expectations. A good set of headphones is pretty much mandatory for use with these when gaming. I sometimes will grab my xm4 Sony earbuds when I don't feel like busting out big cans and those are passable too. I can't hear any fan noise, but obviously the sound isn't as great as out of big cans.

G14 and G16 laptops are compact low profile series of gaming laptops. They are barely bigger than regular laptops and have very little room for cooling. We own a 2022 g14. If you thought Legion 7i was loud, wait till you hear G series start taking off from your desk the moment temperature starts spiking even a little bit. Fans have to compensate for little cooling and airflow and they ramp up quick and laptop runs hot. Don't expect a miracle silent gaming laptop, that's not going to happen.

But I actually do have a suggestion for you and you may laugh but hear me out: MacBook Pro. It's an incredible multimedia and productivity machine. It has best in class speakers, 3k mini LED display, and it's going to be the most silent pro level laptop you ever experienced. It sounds like those 3 are very important for you and this laptop will hands down beat every single gaming laptop in all these 3 categories except OLED screens. Trade off is that it's a productivity machine, not a gaming laptop. It doesn't have a dedicated GPU, so it's not going to run aaa games fast, and it's going to be missing a lot of games that didn't bother supporting Mac OS.

Checking my Steam library, I have 500 games but only 80 are available on Mac. I currently have Slay the Spire, Vampire Survivors, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and few others installed on M1 MBP 14" base model. Older aaa games and non demanding indie games run just fine on apple's iGPU assuming developers did a good job supporting it. I just benchmarked tomb raider and got 100fps on high preset at 900p, with anti-aliasing on. I can check a few others available on Mac if you're curious how they run. Running tomb raider, fans kicked on, but I would say they were still pretty quiet compared to gaming laptop fans. Playing Hades is also an amazing experience. Game looks gorgeous at 3k resolution and fans run so low I had to mute sound to check if they were on. Bottom of the laptop did get hot, not sure about keyboard since I play with a gamepad.

Dang I forgot that, especially since 3080 desktop only came with up to 12. Doesn't make sense the laptop would have more lol.

They dropped the price another $50 to $1699. Kinda strange to do it during the sale week? It's not a deal of the day. They must really have an excess of stock. Either way, makes it better.

Also open box excellent for $1458.

TY for confirming I wasn't imagining things as well! I was like it def was 1750 JUST yesterday ... somehow it dropped another 50 bucks ? : ) Agree, its something I've never seen BestBuy do before.

That said - I am super tempted. I saw both the G14 and G16 2024 models in store and they're super slick and lovely. Even the 16 inch was pretty thin and light, and the speakers and keyboard were very top notch. Only thing I'm not crazy about is lack of touch and only 16 GB on this model. Maybe I'll wait for the 4080 version to drop in price...

Yeah I'm tempted too but realistically the 4080 is the one I need as well. I was thinking this morning if they dropped it another $50 and made it an even $300 off I'd do it. I log on and see the new price and still couldn't do it yet.
