Same, although I don't typically go to a cashier my Sam's has at least double the self checkouts that my Costco has. Never any wait for one.
Call me old school but I prefer spending 60 seconds at self check out to fiddling with the app as I go along.
That aside Sam's and Costco memberships are complimentary for me - Costco for higher end stuff , and the random innovative new products . Sam's for better prices on staples, as well as free shipping on plus.
BJ's has always been third tier for me, but have a membership because they are always giving away free ones. Prices are higher than Costco on everything I buy. Also my two recent experiences with customer service were terrible ( damaged item ordered online taken months to replace, membership promotion not applying)
First time was a 3 year old expired email & address. Failed, said new members only.
2nd was another old email. Failed.
3rd was an email alias on hotmail that we had never used for Sams. Success
Weird thing though. The emails from Sams got sent to a DIFFERENT old email hotmail address. Not the email on the account. Their database musty be really messed up.
I'll wait a couple of days and see if everything gets straightened out. We must have 2 dozen different (obsolete) entries in their database.
How is it these days. Is it worth buying if I also have Costco ?

Note: I was able to use the same email and phone number for both names on the membership when signing up.
Last couple of times, with deal slightly different and you had to go to the desk. Had to show drivers license and they typed it in, and said "Oh, you have an old account that has expired and you must pay $40 to renew it." Had to argue with her and insist she look up the membership number that I had printed out.
Seems now they are pushing the app hard, and the physical card is lesser importance.
We almost always use the app and do show-and-go. It always works in-store, but sometimes won't work at the gas pump so I have to use the card.
