The 10 year smoke alarms will not last 10 years. I bought a bunch for a new house and had to replace the majority within 3 years.

On the flip side of that, we bought all new ten- year alarms just about six years ago, and they're all doing fine.

The hardwired options are ionization sensors. I want photoelectric for less false alarms

two pack for $17

https://www.target.com/p/first-al...A-14791445

but note they come with really stupid "heavy duty" batteries which shouldn't even exist anymore and will only last months, not a year

smoke detectors were another dumb thing affected by "inflation" for some inexplicable reason

This appears to be a battery-only version. Please be careful, as many towns have specific regulations prohibiting smoke alarms that operate solely on batteries. My town is one of them. It's generally better to purchase a hardwired, interconnected alarm.

First Alert Precision Detection, 10-year Battery Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm, 2-pack

https://www.costco.com/first-aler...18743.html

Probably cheaper in store as they add for shipping.

Heads up, for those in CA, a new law goes into effect on July 1, limiting any sales of new smoke alarms to either hardwired-only, or 10-year-battery ones, no more swappable battery models. It covers some of the "warranty" versus "battery length" stuff below.
Quote :
Beginning July 1, 2014, California Senate Bill 745 requires that all solely battery-operated smoke alarms and combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms sold and installed in California must contain a non-replaceable, non-removable battery that is capable of powering the smoke alarm for a minimum of 10 years. The requirement does not apply to any alarms that are hard-wired.

Maybe for new builds or for those with existing wiring, but no town can force people to wire their houses for smoke detectors.
