Tempting but will Google drop support for this soon is the question..
I can confidently say I will not buy another nest product. We have had nothing but headaches with all Google products all the way down to the smoke detectors. Google likes to take features away for zero reason. The fun really begins when you have been using an app for 6 months and then they just completely take away all support for it and force you to use another app that works half as good. Hopefully you heed my warning.
This is a major problem for many, many people. Reddit's Google and Nest subs have been talking about it for months with nothing but silence from Google. All three of my Nest x Yale locks routinely go offline for no reason.

Don't do it! Nest products have been nothing but hours of troubleshooting with their support with no resolution.

-Posted from my paperweight nest connect that Google support escalated to engineering and still can't fix

Been unhappy with mine lately. It's been going offline frequently. Network hasn't changed. Sometimes I've had to factory reset the connect and lock to get it online again. Even when I try and update wifi settings on the connect it doesn't help.
When it works it works well. I use rechargable AA's.

Yeah, your issues were my exact concerns when deciding against this, mainly because it uses August internals, which in my experience are simply horrible when it comes to connectivity. Add to it that there is no actual keyhole for when the device goes offline? Hard pass again.

Have had a great experience with the Wyze door locks, FYI.

The lock has been rock solid for years except for the daily disconnect notifications every day for the past couple of months. Recently did a factory reset and will see how it goes but I am not alone with this issue.

I would stay away from Nest products. Google raised the price on the monthly subscription by 35% for no reason. No extra features either. I have a Nest thermostat and it's nothing but trouble for me.

After doing hours of research on smart locks. The best bang for the buck is Wyze Doorlock. No WiFi, but it has fingerprint and keypad. $70.

Aqara U100 is $150 and it has all the bells and whistles. Keypad, key, fingerprint, and Apple Homekey.

Lock works fine but lacks features from its competitors. My biggest annoyances below

-No unlock on approach, if your hands are full you still gotta type in the code
-Doesn't know if door is open or closed, no way to check if it's CLOSED and locked, only if the lock is extended
-Tries to auto lock even if door is open (results in lots of accidental slams of the deadbolt on doorframe)

Mine did in 2021. Other than that would say it's been a reliable unit and has given me zero issues that I can think of. Bought late 2021 and have only changed the batteries once (albeit the spendy lithium AA's, which do help it work faster).

Only issue I had at all was with initial install, where it was pretty finicky about having a very perfectly aligned lock plate for the deadbolt. Only other complaint is that I wish it had a manual key override "just in case", but I think it's pretty conservative on the low battery warnings, and has been a real lifesaver on many occasions.

Completely agree. The only difficult part of the install was aligning the bolt with the plate. If it's not perfectly aligned, the unit says "unable to lock..."

The easy way to do it is to coat all 4 sides of the bolt with lipstick and then slide the bolt into the plate. You'll see where the bolt hits the plate and file it off or align the door.

Any other better was to do this?

I have an older version of this and you're locked in the awful Nest ecosystem. I would avoid. I ended up completely disconnecting it from wifi and Nest. Just using the key pad now.

Mine died after 5 years. The bolt got misaligned. No way to repair the device. This should not happen. Having to replace a smart device in 5 years. Cannot and will not recommend this product.

I've noticed you need a separate hub to use smart features on most locks. Looks like you need one on the U100 as well?

Anybody recommend smart, secure, locks with good battery life? I don't have a smart home or a hub.

I've had this exact lock for probably 5 years now and have never had an issue with it. Super convenient to be able to unlock remotely or add an extra code if I know someone's going to need access.

That said... I unfortunately bought into the Nest ecosystem a long time ago so I'm stuck unless I want to pay thousands to buy into another crappy ecosystem. The truth of the matter is that all smart home products suck. I wouldn't start into the Nest world from scratch at this point, but this lock has been great for me and I'm ordering a second for my back door simply so I don't need physical keys for one door and not the other. BUT I wouldn't recommend buying it if you're not already stuck with Nest. My other Nest products are much more garbage than this lock. I can't think of _any_ other ecosystem that is rock solid though. The Smart Home dream is one of the single biggest tech failures in my opinion.
