Deal Details
Southwest Airlines is offering Rapid Reward Members 20 points per $1 donated to offset carbon emissions by their planes/operation. You can earn up to 50k points on the program, but those points do not count towards A list or Companion status.

This is better than booking a Business Select flight at 12 points per $1 from what it seems, even with some of the funds donated going towards organization fees.

Taxes and fees (except for the processing fee) will not be matched by Southwest or earn points. From 4/19 – 5/19, 2024 Rapid Rewards® Members can earn 20 Rapid Rewards bonus points per dollar spent on offsets up to a maximum of 50,000 Rapid Rewards bonus points per month. Points will only be awarded to the Member's Rapid Rewards account number entered at the time of the carbon offset transaction. Southwest's matching contribution will be used to purchase additional offsets to support global projects, and such additional offsets will be retired for Southwest. Terms and conditions apply.

From April 19 through May 19, 2024 (the "Promotional Period"), Rapid Rewards Members can earn 20 Rapid Rewards bonus points per U.S. dollar ($1) contributed towards the purchase of offsets for Southwest® through https://www.southwest.com/wannaoffsetcarbon (excluding taxes and fees associated with the transaction, except for the processing fee). The number of bonus points awarded will be based on the dollar amount contributed towards the purchase of offsets at the time of the transaction (excluding taxes and fees associated with the transaction, except for the processing fee). The bonus points awarded will be rounded up to the nearest point. For example: During the Promotional Period, if a Rapid Rewards Member contributes $5.95 (excluding taxes and fees associated with the transaction, except for the processing fee) towards the purchase of offsets for Southwest, Southwest will deposit a total of one hundred twenty (120) bonus points for the transaction. The transaction will appear in the Rapid Rewards Member's My Account as "CO2 Rapid Rewards bonus points". Rapid Rewards bonus points will be credited within eight weeks from the original transaction date. Bonus points are in addition to the standard flight points earned through Rapid Rewards. Bonus points will not count toward A-List, A-List Preferred, or Companion Pass® qualification. Payments for carbon offset transactions are non-refundable, so bonus points awarded for carbon offset transactions will be retained in the Rapid Rewards Member's account. This offer is subject to change and may be canceled at any time.

- $0.5618 (Processing fee)
- $0.40 (Technology and Administration fee to CHOOOSE)
Carbon Offset Contribution: $9.02663
Fees: $0.97337

I'm having a hard time understanding what this is all about. Is this a donation or just regular purchasing of flight tickets on SW?

They're donating $2 for every $1, so yes.

I don't think you understand how exchanging money for goods and services works. Once I pay for something it isn't my money anymore.

this isn't an exchange for goods or services, this is a donation. you are not required to pay the carbon crap fee.

Carbon offset purchases do NOT count towards companion or A List point requirements, FYI.

Ok, now where does the money that they are matching come from? That would be Southwest's money that they are only using if you decide to donate to this program.

I'm asking about the CEO, not the company. Learn how to read next time.

Why does the CEO have to match the money when the Company is? Your gotcha at the CEO is dumb.

So $2500 for 50K points, is my math right there? That does not seem like a good deal.

These "donations" would be better spent on their software infrastructure.

$2500 if used for Business Select tickets, which offers highest points value for a flight, would get you 30k points alternatively.

Why are you comparing donations to buying a ticket?
20 points per dollar is $0.05 per point, when the points are only worth ~$0.014.
You could buy 50k points right now for $825. ($0.0165 per point) if anything, that is what you should be comparing to.
This is only a "deal" if you already planned to buy carbon offsets.
