Would you be able to direct me to something you'd recommend. I'm familiar with flaring and working w copper & electric.
Half of downstairs already has central air because of a renovation I did a few years ago. Rest of house uses window units bc no ducting. It's a standard 4 blocker cape cod from early 70s. 2,000 sq ft total. The 5 cassettes would cover a total of about 1,200-1,500 sq ft.
Master bedroom (bedroom 1) = bedroom 2 + bedroom 3 in terms of sq ft. Bedroom 3 is tiny. Slanted ceilings bc of roof and dormer for window. Twin bed is the largest that can fit in there. Bedroom 2 is 11'x12'

I purchased the 18k costway unit and it works great.
I have two MrCool DIY 3rd Gen (24 and 18k). Both units had leaks on their condenser after three years of use during summer (south Florida). The good news is that the warranty works and you don't have to ship the unit back but you have to pay ups shipping (about $130). The sound deadening pads over the quick connect is a pain to remove (use goo gone to get it fully clean, do not put any on the o rings!). Other issue was with the valves of the compressor. They leak slowly refrigerant to the lines so that it is impossible to create a good vacuum. I had to recover the refrigerant with my recovery machine.
Also, I see some folks here who describe just buying a vacuum pump and gauge. Not enough. You need at least a good gauge that can read in microns. You have to triple evacuate (ideally) with dry N2 after checking for leaks (pressure check at about 300psi or whatever your low pressure side can take. Last step is to look for the decay, at least pulling down to below 500 micron, then look it rise and if below 1000 micron after 20 or 30 minutes, you are good to go and release the refrigerant into the lines.
What is good is that the costway uses R32 which is the newer refrigerant. Hard to buy right now though. MrCool uses 410a which used to be cheap but more expensive now.
Oh, you should all take the free course from skillcat EPA 608. Free for two weeks and then take the exam. Then you are legal working on these AC units.
One issue I see with these cheap units which are managed by non professionals is that most of that refrigerant will end up in the atmosphere and this is sad for the environment. Monitor your refrigerant levels (should be at around 115-125, 117 median) and look for leaks if below. Invest in a recovery machine as the best practice to tip them off is to recover and then reload the proper amount in weight of refrigerant.
So, get the training, invest in good gear (about $1500 for your all setup) and use good practice. Don't vent into the atmosphere and monitor your AC vitals often.
I wanted to test if the inverter mini split would work for my needs and this unit delivered. I will upgrade to better brand if it ever failed.
I already placed the order for the 17000 BTU. Is it okay to apply for Plus+ now to stack that 15% on it?
