Great deal - I'm still rocking the DS216j... these things are pretty great if you have realistic expectations. File backup, security camera video storage, file sharing, local streaming without transcoding... I love mine - and the fact that I'm still getting updates 8 years after original release is a great testament to Synology's support for older generations.

All these cautionary statements.. folks $100 for Synology ain't bad and a great way to learn NAS and see if for you. Plus, if you plan on expanding, Synology software makes it very easy to move upwards.. nevertheless, Synology isn't as plug and play as it's seems by reading reviews, and their help sections can use an overhaul. Synology has no excuse not to have improved troubleshooting with the power of AI if they would just invest barely nothing more

Great deal - I'm still rocking the DS216j... these things are pretty great if you have realistic expectations. File backup, security camera video storage, file sharing, local streaming without transcoding... I love mine - and the fact that I'm still getting updates 8 years after original release is a great testament to Synology's support for older generations.

I imagine if you want transcoding you could just use it as a NAS and have a different, more powerful server do the transcoding? I'm asking because I'm planning on building a Plex/jellyfin media server soon and I want it to be able to do 4k

Personally I wouldn't use the J models. There are many reasons. If you are not familiar, I'd read into it before making a decision.

If you're going to use this model, I would just use it as file storage and run Plex on your computer. To run Plex on a Synology box, you really want the "+" model.

I am still using a 212j after over 10 years. It is slow when changing settings in the console but fast enough as file share.
