Just came across this that Amazon is having a special on the newer MacBook Air with the M3 chip. Seems like a decent deal but don't kill me on it. I'm neither a Mac or PC fan just came across this and looking for a deal for my kids seems like this might be a pretty good offer at this point, take it or leave it. That 8gb on Mac slowed down significantly after a month. I only use office and chrome with 10 tabs. It's slower than my i3 1220p with 12GB ram $259 laptop. I recommend against anyone buying it unless you are those people who can not even differentiate 60hz and 120hz screen side by side.

My cell phone has more RAM than this laptop. I heard, the 8GB RAM version crashes during large zip archive decompression, because of the little RAM size. That's crazy. Don't buy.

For those with trigger fingers… 8gb in 2024 is indeed a travesty. If you really want it you need at least 16gb.

Unless the only thing you do is have no more 1-5 tabs open at once on browser and do VERY light office work.

if that's the case just grab a m1 MacBook for way cheaper

However I will say if you plan to do any video editing with h265 codec m3 chips can decode and encode which is way faster. But I would still suggest a 16gb for creative work

Glad we got the RAM comments out of the way early. For what it's worth, my M1 with 8GB of RAM has no problem doing any kind of office work– MS Office, Edge browser, connecting to remote computers, light photo editing. Battery life is a beast on top of it.

It's not even a good deal for 8GB/256GB.

That's the M2 model. Granted, not a lot of difference between it and this M3 model, but the M3 notably supports two displays while in clamshell mode, while the M2 is limited to one display. The M2 also uses the single storage chip compared to the dual chips on the M3, so read/write speeds for large/numerous files are going to be slower on the M2, if that's something you'll be doing often.

8gb is just not justifiable. I like apple products, Im using MacBooks since 2003, and Apple possess as a premium brand, but still the prices for very basic specs are outrageous. For that money, 16gb ram and 512gb ssd should be the bare minimum.

Using the same one still and zero issues. I don't use photoshop or anything. I do hate they still putting 256GB in tho.

I think 8GB for the average user is no issue whatsoever. I do know that laptop sales are DEAD. Look for more price cuts. The only issue is that Apple makes alot more at 8GB than 16GB.

I have a custom built desktop for work. But I use my iPad Pro 99% of the time and almost never use my MacBook unless my iPad is dead or for like music software for my guitar effects processors. I still get tempted on these new Mac deals but when I do fire up the m1 , it's still impressive to me. 😬 So I see why sales are dead.

8gb is enough or not really heavily depends on what you do with it. I edit a 300 page novel/document and it got chocked. The important part to know is that a 300 page doc is only 4mb, a fraction of 1gb, yet the Word needs so much ram to edit a large document is what killed the process.
The same doc flew on my 16gb pro and 32gb studio.
