Personally, home assistant is my backend with Apple HomeKit as my interface for my family and guests. Once you get this invested in home automation, you'll learn that certain products work better for you than someone else. Side benefit to homepod's is the ability to detect a fire alarm going off in your house and sending an emergency alert to your phone, and sound quality is a good bit better on this vs an echo dot

I've never seen them go for less than $65 brand new, though you can often get them like-new on eBay for $60. They're solid for home automation if you are in 's ecosystem.

I am the biggest Apple fanboy there is, but I tried one of these a few months ago and it was terrible. I recently went all in on HomeKit, so this seemed like the natural companion to that. Nope… not very responsive, it would just start playing music on its own, it never knew what I was saying etc. You know how terrible Siri is on your phone? It is equally as terrible in a standalone device. Maybe I expected too much coming from Alexa, but it was the only Apple product I have ever returned.

I know it wasn't something that was available for everyone but...these were $50 on ShopMyExchange.com (Military/Veterans). I think it was only white and blue that were that price and they sold out in a few hours I think.

With that being said, that was a one time thing and I've never seen it that price again.
