Not the same stuff as even 10 years ago. Craftsman like most American Companies are riding on their reputation alone. The product has turned rather turdish...like Boeing, Otis, GM/Ford, Stanley, etc...

This good for around the house, or are mechanic sets usually better for machinery/cars?

Isn't bad at all, I like it better than kobalt, dewalt, or husky. The best part is that it has a great lifetime warranty. If anything breaks just bring it to any Lowes and they would replace it, no receipt needed.

Lowes now has a no receipt, no store credit policy. I have a craftsman set I got but it's smaller , so you think this is a good upgrade?

Craftsman CS is still good. Never an issue with replacements or refunds.

I found that out the hard way this weekend. Went camping and got stranded. Had to Uber to Walmart to get tools.

The struggle with wanting to own all of the things in one box, and ending up both missing things from that box and being unable to use more than half of the things in the box, is real.

I recently blocked my own driveway - this could have happened at the grocery store, or 150 miles away, without warning - and scouring the internets has not revealed any solutions other than the first one I chose: stubby closed end wrench, length of 2x2, and >2lb hammer, or the two I didn't: remove wheel (on a hill), 18" breaker bar + 12pt socket (+ hammer), or right angle compact pneumatic impact - M12 looks too big. This just happens to be a quirk of this particular car that I haven't experienced with others - which had their own quirks.

The metric selection in this set looks pretty good, but thinking about 17mm and 19mm wrenches, deep 1/2" sockets, etc prompted me to write this.

This always seems to be the case, try and be prepared and for whatever reason, always missing just the right tool. This set is pretty decent for the price, but it isn't an extensive collection for a qualified mechanic, working on any car model, for every part and every manufacture and year. As a first kit, it's not bad and I'd fill in with other items one might think they would need (lug sockets, breaker bar, hammer, and put those in a bag with a tire inflator, small patch kit and battery "jump starter"). I typically have "more than enough" tools in my truck, but my wife happen to get a flat tire the other day, I hadn't put an inflator in her car and I just got done cleaning out it my truck, and left everything out. I have no less than 8 portable inflators at home (3 of the cheap Ryobi drill looking units, 4 cigarette lighter type inflators, a battery powered Ryobi small air compressor, a dewalt flexvolt battery powered air compressor, etc). My wife couldn't figure out why I was so pissed (we only lived 5 miles from where her car got the flat). But it wasn't about the distance, but the fact that I was so stupid and careless in not having the proper tool in the car. I have a wife and 2 daughters and I usually have a small tool kit and an inflator in each car. 🤦🏼 ♂️

I'm sorry, this doesn't answer your question but Lowe's return policy is absolute trash now. My local Lowe's will not accept returns after 30 days, period. Receipt or no. Recently took a few items back around the 40-day mark WITH A RECEIPT. Everything was new, in box. I had spaced on taking them back. They would not accept the return, not even as store credit (which is my go-to for things like that. I'll always need Lowe's SC.) Not any more. I strictly shop Home Depot now.

I just had the same thing happen yesterday, I had the reciept for a Craftsman socket set, new in the box, with their item # on the side. Tried ot look up with my CC# and they wouldn't even try with my ID, said talk a walk. I said this is Craftsman, only Lowe's sells it and I don't even want the money, I just want to put towards a different set.

They didnt' care. Lowe's was always trash to me, never anyone to help or knowledgeable. Only some pretty stuff compared to HD which is more basic looking decor.

I think it's BS that after 10 days they didn't give you credit, I would really have made a big deal out of that especially since it's the receipt or tried another Lowe's that may have been more accepting

This isn't rooted in fact, and is just parroting others with absolutely no justification. There are plenty on YouTube testing these tools daily and showing they perform.
