23 and me is a BAD VENDOR. Profit driven, using your data in stuff they sell to others that is supposed to be anonymized but wasn't or wasn't properly (more than once). They've been hacked by China (most recent one: https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/04...ion-users/), too. Our neighbor down the street has a daughter that worked there from the beginning and has plenty of horror stories. Never do 23 and me.

Never.

I don't believe Ancestry proper has been hacked. Their subsidiary rootsweb was in 2017, but unlike 23 and me, they didn't blame their customers for their system's security failure. I know plenty who have done Ancestry and found blood relatives they didn't know they had. So, and easy recommendation for Ancestry, especially at this price!

Share your genetic and racial info for free in their data records. Your insurance might access them in future to decipher about your health issues down the lane. Dont share your DNA period.

Don't waste your money on this crap. I did mine with 23andme and they asked a ton of survey questions about my origin and the results they provided was exactly what I gave them. It took them 3 mths for providing nothing more than I already know. It is a total scam.

Cool I was waiting for a DNA test kit to be on sale so I can download my DNA and get reports from others.

I haven't used 23andme's test but have done 5-6 Ancestry tests with non-blood relatives. We did not give origin info, and they're mixed and partially unknown descendancy anyways. For us the Ancestry tests were very informative.

The misses and I actually talked last week about doing a couple more for older or married in family members that have unknown background so I'll bite.

Thanks OP. 👍

Would you have been more impressed with 23andMe if they'd given you ancestry results that are different than what you already know?

If you were simply hoping for more specificity, I've seen a lot better results in that regard with Ancestry than 23andMe.

This is the one recommended by Wirecutter. I'm tempted... my ancestors have been in the US since before the revolution so we don't know a ton about ancestry.

Looks like the same price on Ancestry.com [ancestry.com], and says the sale there ends May 12th.

AncestryDNA's ethnicity estimates get more precise as their reference database grows, and interpretations for specific regions, particularly recent ancestry or smaller populations, may be less precise

Was looking for a deal on DNA testing. Got 4.
Will read reviews later and return if it has quality or privacy concerns.

Anyone know how good it is for South Asian Ancestry and health/diet predictions?

can you use a fake name?
i'd like to get the results but not suffer any potential anonymity consequences.

Looks like you get very vague results if you're from anywhere in Asia.

Might be counter-productive if you have blood relatives you don't know about. I feel better about Ancestry's privacy practices than anyone else in this segment.

Have always been interested in getting origin data but I swear this data might be sold one day. Would hate to be denied health insurance or charged a premium for what story these results can tell.

I don't care a lick about the ancestry part, is this as good as any other for genetic information that I can upload into a service like Promethease?
