So a person drops $1,200 on an M1 and they can expect to get how many years of use out of it before Apple stops updating and performance degrades?

I managed to use an old 2012 model for about 10 years. With the performance of these new arm chips this thing should last a long time. Right now I'm doing all my personal web dev stuff on a 2021 M1 Air with 16Gb ram and its still doing great.
I would say this model could easily last 5 more years. Although for safety I would recommend spending a little more on some extra ram. 32gb should be more than enough. And apple is pretty good at supporting older models.

I'm still using mid-2011 macbook air. changed battery once after 10 yr, applied new thermal paste at the same time and upgraded ssd to 1TB (OWC aura pro). It still works fine on high sierra.

Maybe you upgraded the RAM too... But you won't be able to do either of those things to this one. Well, maybe the battery, but it was nice when you didn't need to fully disassemble the laptop and use isopropyl alcohol to remove the cells.

I expect the M1-series chips to still get whatever new macOS gets announced in 2029.

Likely at least 4 years of updates. After that Apple will still provide security updates. This will be usable for many years.

I have a base M1 Air that I got close to original release date. It works just as well and as fast as it was at release over 3 years ago.

The M1 Pro is such a gigantic leap over the intel chips it replaced so realistically as long as you want it to last unless your needs change significantly.

Would not recommend anyone throw >$1k on non-Apple "refurbished" Macbook with questionable warranty. If it is dead or has any issues, there is nothing you can do about it other than paying out of pocket to get it fixed. You might as well get a used one on Swappa, some of which even have more than 1 year of Apple care at a similar price point.

No 2011 macbook air also had soldered ram. I have 4GB on it that works fine.
