Was my daughters idea, as she had the exact same problem with one bought from Best Buy, and she called their online customer service who did the same activation confirmation which for some reason was needed done in both cases for the card numbers to now work flawlessly on Dominos website.
Store specific gift cards, like Domino's, Subway, etc, are not supposed to have expiration dates or maintenance fees, and most will allow them to be used towards partial payment, with remainder paid by cash or another card even when you cannot add to the balance of the card.
Specific retailer cards, like for Domino's, would need to be presented to the business directly that sells a specific product or service, whereas open cards like prepaid Visa or Mastercard (that often will have expiration dates, and they then absorb any balance after that date as maintenance fees, until the card is emptied) can be cashed out under $10 anywhere that it would have been accepted for payment.
Small part of legal statement:
"Gift certificates and gift cards are covered by statutes setting these basic rules:2
Most gift certificates and gift cards sold by retail sellers for use with the seller and its affiliates cannot contain an expiration date or a service fee, including a fee for dormancy.3
Any gift certificate sold after January 1, 1997, is redeemable in cash for its cash value, or subject to replacement with a new gift certificate at no cost to the purchaser or holder.4 Effective January 1, 2008, any gift certificate with a cash value of less than $10 is redeemable in cash, which includes currency or check, for its cash value.
California laws governing gift cards and gift certificates cannot be waived.5"
