The series is definitely early 90s chic, but the OP theme song is definitely part of the canon of 90s anime bangers...def one you'd listen to alongside Cruel Angel's Thesis, Just Communication, Smile Bomb, the opening sung by Megumi for Escaflowne, etc.)
The series has alot of fingerprints from other renowned figures in the early industry. Miyazaki wrote the original idea for the show in the 70s and Gainax went underwater due to the show, only being able to pay back the note from profits on Evangelion (which was originally going to be a loose sequel to Nadia). There are a bunch of (not so hidden) Macross easter eggs hidden in the series from what I remember.
It's a great series from back in the day. The only downside for JP version is that the subtitles cannot be shut off. (They must be "burned in"). Even so, a great buy at this price and in HD.
