"A more sophisticated true-RMS meter can accurately measure both pure waves and the more complex non-sinusoidal waves. Waveforms can be distorted by nonlinear loads such as variable speed drives or computers. An averaging meter attempting to measure distorted waves can be up to 40% low or 10% high in its calculations."

I know Fluke is a more premium brand but what is it that makes these better than something a lot cheaper like a Klein tools or Chinese brand multimeter. Are these more accurate, more durable?

I believe the number is more accurate, but it doesn't matter if you are not a professional

I have 4 different Fluke meters. An old model 8, the baby 101, the 374FC, and the 88V. Only the 374 is TRMS.

Unless you are working on very specialty-type stuff, you really don't need a TRMS meter....

I can't tell you how many Klein meters have just stopped working for me. I won't buy them again.

It's a good question. Fluke certainly has the reputation of accuracy, reliability and build quality. I purchased a Fluke 107 (for $100 about three years ago) based upon my experiences with their high-end oscilloscopes. However, I think Klein is a good comparison because it also shares that reputation. For $69, I believe the Fluke is a solid deal. It has ammeter mode and autoranging. With those features, I'm pretty sure you would be paying more than $69 for a Klein.

Have you tried Fieldpiece meters? Virtually every HVAC tech I have ever met has one. They are really well designed and accessories (thermocouples, gas detectors, etc...) aren't outrageously expensive.

I think you're right but "Chinese" is more referencing the fake chinese brands than the country of manufacture. It's more of a catch all term for non brand name cheap, inaccurate, fragile junk.

fluke is also safer when you work with high voltages or electrical lines and wires. cheap ones could burn or short, and fluke will not. although i am not sure you will use this model if you need to work with high voltages. if you just need to check 1.5v or 9v batteries or check continuity in wires, you might be better off with clein set for 40$ that includes multi meter, outlet tester and non contact tester. something like this: Klein Tools 69355 Digital Multimeter Premium Electrical Test Kit with Non-Contact Voltage Tester, Receptacle Tester, Test Leads https://a.co/d/5jHh04o
