Just so you know, this is the lower strength version, which in my personal experience does very little (especially if it's an intense itch). The higher strength version (2X stronger) is more effective (and you'll likely use less). It's available OTC in various generic brands and shouldn't cost more than $2-3 for a 1 oz. tube (I pay under $3 for it in a ShopRite supermarket). The Benadryl brand is obviously going to be more expensive, but the generics for this product work just as well.
The efficacy for generic topicals can vary by product.
Here's a link to a 2% generic version sold by Amazon (in a larger tube as well):

This is not a great deal when considering alternatives. I was able to get the Benadryl Extra Strength (2% diphenhydramine HCI) 3.5oz for $3.03 which seems like a better deal per ounce, and a more effective dose. YMMV.

Benadryl's 1-ounce Original-Strength Anti-Itch Stopping Cream soothes skin pain and itching from outdoor sources like insect bites, burns, and poison ivy. Its formula includes 1% diphenhydramine hydrochloride and 0.1% zinc acetate, suitable for ages 2 and up during outdoor activities.

Basically any generic brand. Such as the ones sold at Walmart, Target, Walgreens, etc. Here's a link to a generic brand sold by Amazon. It's 2% (vs. 1%) and the cost is $2.50 a tube (if purchasing 4). There are other quantity options as well. In this case, it's also a larger tube (1.5 oz. vs. 1 oz.).

I agree with the Snail. Skip the 1% and get any anti-itch 2% diphenhydramine HCI.

If you can get a generic that's a roll-on, that may be the bees knees. Not only for the 2% diphenhydramine HCI but the roll on serves as substitute for getting temporary scratching euphoria by pressing down hard while applying.

Interesting idea....but you might be wasting it while doing that. It's hard not to scratch (or at least rub) your skin when it's itching, but by being a bit patient, the itching should subside (hopefully!) within a few minutes after using the cream.

Rub the inside of a banana peel to stop the itch from poison ivy/oak/sumac rash.
Yes, it sounds very strange, but I am one week into a bad poison ivy reaction & three days into using the banana peel. So far it has worked better than any of this:
Benadryl (pill & cream—not simultaneously), vaporub, gold bond medicated powder, tea tree oil, steroid shot, hand sanitizer, lavender essential oil (diluted with coconut oil), baking soda, maybe more things—this is all I can remember trying in the past week. None of these things have been as effective as banana peel.
Also, ground-up dried tea leaves (like you'd use to brew a cup of tea) do help some with itch relief, but not as good as banana peel. I do have to reapply every few hours (usually 2-3x/day) and I take one Benadryl pill at night, but the banana peel seriously stops the itch completely and doesn't make me sleepy, so that's a huge benefit.

I didn't have the coupon for the 2%. In fact I didn't have the coupon for the 1%, but there was a coupon for the 2x1% 2oz tubes that somehow 'took' when I ordered just 1 1% tube.
