the old plug in one would just have a plastic stopper once the dirty water was full it would block the vac from sucking anymore.
this has a sensor that seems to tell people that dirty water is full even when it's empty.

for whatever reason they seem to break and stop charging
we had the same unit replaced twice through warranty after little use several months in and they refused to do it again. This seems to be somewhat common in my findings online. The corded models seem bullet proof though.
YMMV of course. This is a good deal.
