Edit: I've personally traded in several devices (phones and watch) in Mountain View. In all instances they physically took the device and gave me credit instantly. I can't personally vouch for the other stores.

I think most people who have problems with the trade are the same folks sending in garbage and claiming they sent in something pristine. Also the average IQ in the US is double digits, so there's that too.
