Edit: I've personally traded in several devices (phones and watch) in Mountain View. In all instances they physically took the device and gave me credit instantly. I can't personally vouch for the other stores.

If I request a trade-in kit online, can I pick it up in-store?
No, to pick up a trade-in kit in-store, you must start the trade-in process in-store.
For in-store trade-in, do I hand in my device on the spot?
Yes, you can hand in your device during the in-store trade-in.
How does the trade-in process work at retail stores?
A store associate will guide you through the trade-in process. However, unlike online trade-in, you can get a trade-in credit on the same day, which can be used on another Google product in-store or online.

If you're into tinkering then this is objectively much better than an iOS device.
This device costing $200+full tax+headache of buying a used iPad and hoping google to accept your device.
Horror stories made sure for me to avoid this.
Which stores? Thank you for mentioning.

What an absolutely nonsensical and moronic comment. The Android open-source ecosystem is a tinkerer's dream! It takes very little effort to get a completely ad-free and pleasant experience from most apps, including the mainstream ones.
This device is particularly attractive because you can have all those and use it as a home hub (akin to an upgraded Google Home…which I imagine what they were shooting for with this design).
This deal might not be the best, but Android isn't the culprit here.
Trade-in problems may exist surely, but don't knock the product if you're not knowledgeable on how to use it.

The deal would be bad if trade-in problems are there on top of a below average product.
This conversation started from Google selling the dock for +$100. Other than the dock the tablet is not that good. When you add up the trade-in issues, it become worse for people who do not value android over others.
