Had a similar one from costco and while I agree it needs cleaning and mold does build up, for me it was over several months of daily use pretty much. Very difficult to clean in my opinion.

one of the offices i work has it and it is pretty clean without daily cleaning. I suppose this depends on where you live

Any idea how something like this would fair camping on a week long trip using an inverter or power box to power?

Cleaning would be difficult because mold builds up fast. It requires proper cleaning after each time it is used.

Youd have to size the inverter to double the amp draw of the device, you cant simply match it!

I think the question is regarding powering this thing while mobile...

Has anyone successfully powered this only with a mobile power source ?

I have but you need 2 AGM batteries 75 amp hours.. 1 worked but was iffy.. only 40ah ($150/$75)

Thick electrical power cables to connect everything ($75)

An inverter ($130)...

Obviously the ice machine ($50)

Time and headache to install as well as space for all this in the car...

Total cost $400 but no longer having to beg McDonalds for a cup of ice worth it IMHO

Looks like there are rv models that might work better. inverters are so inefficient. I have access to unlimited free 12v batteries, but still not sure if I need this. 😅

Really enjoy ours, never had any mold, but I empty it after every few uses and let it dry completely. Easy to empty with the tab on the bottom.

This one makes the bullet style ice. If you can spring for it, get one that makes the clear ice cubes. Beautiful clear ice and they melt slower too.

Good and bad.
On one hand it pulls very little energy when it does run. So depending on how your powering it, it should be fine. But it doesnt keep ice cold enough to stay frozen, so it will melt over a few hours. It's more of: make the ice to use.
But then again it could come in handy to make ice for the ice chest. Just take a long time. I think it can make 7lbs in 4 to 6 hours if you are really on top of it.

I forget how much energy it draws. Like 90w or so per hour. I know I tested mine and after 4 hours I don't think it pulled even a whole kWh.

Hope that helps.

also don't worry about cleaning it "after every use" once a month or so if using consistently. or sooner with heavier use. you just want to get the calcium out. I never got mold in mine.

and when using it, always get the water as cold as possible before making ice you want to consume. either let it run for a while and remove the basket so the newly made ice falls into the water, or pour some ice into the water. it will make thicker ice and faster.
