A new 182x+ is over due. Hopefully a new 1824+ or 1825+ will be announced soon.

I have to commend synology. I bought mine in 2018, and it's still going strong, no issues. Probably the longest running electronic I have at this point (has survived several computer upgrades, a few TV's, microwaves, two mesh router systems, three robot vacuums, and lots of other misc). Maybe electronics are just made poorly these days, but my Synollgy NAS keeps chugging along.

I just wish it had the Intel processors to transcode on Plex better.

I love my Roku and don't want to have to run a separate second computer just for Plex.

I got on the ugreen nas deal. Hopefully I get it next month. What do you use to rip your movies? I have 500 DVDs I want to put up on it. I want to something like you did and have it as a streaming server for my home.

also curious what size and kind harddrives are you running?
I use MakeMKV, it's not quite a one-click solution but it's damn close. I strip out all the foreign language stuff for slight file size reduction.

I use it for Blu Ray and UHD discs both.

I'm a noob and been watching out for a Synology NAS. I originally had my eye on DS423+ mainly because of PLEX compatibility. Should I jump on this deal or wait for a deal on DS423+ considering Memorial is coming up?

Just curious...how is Plex illegal?

It's not, they're just suggesting that everyone who uses Plex fills it with pirated media. They don't, and some people even use it for that godforsaken commercial filled TV service they run through it. Some people use it like a DVR for their OTA antennas with a home run or similar hardware.

It's not all piracy.

I mean it's a LOT, but it's not all

Tempted but waiting for Black Friday to update my Drobo. Despite the disaster the company was, my Drobo 5N is still working great going on 8 years and worked as intended through two hard drive failures over the years. Just hot swapped the drive and it began rebuilding itself. I keep it running as a plex media server nearly all of the time. Disassemble it once a year to clean out the dust and what not. However, even though it's not broke yet, I need to be proactive in moving content to a new NAS, because when it goes, there's no support options available to me.
My Drobo5n fan just died. Replaced it overheats, might be the PS. Put an external fan in front and its been fine for a few weeks. Love the simplicity of it. My backup is a Synology 1521+ and an Unraid setup. Looking to replace the Drobo now, but think I'll wait until the new models come out.

Sigh. For the uninitiated, everyone on here who is talking about this "Plex" thing is pretty much speaking in code for [not saying the actual word so it doesn't auto-block my post] "sailing the high seas". You know, an unaffiliated maritime scoundrel with scurvy, but with someone else's media & entertainment products.

These folks use a lot of circular and backwards logic to justify what they're doing, but it all comes down to a simple fact -- it's not legal.
But I'm a minority so it's okay I get a free pass as the laws discriminate against me.

To go with this deal, here's the unofficial 64GB upgrade which just happens to be on sale:

https://www.newegg.com/v-color-64...0039-00022

Have been using it in my DS1821+ for the past two years.
Thanks for sharing! Would you mind giving some more insight on this? What do you mean unofficial upgrade? Also, why would it need to be upgraded to this amount of RAM? Appreciate any info you can provide. I'm looking to make a decision to pull the trigger on this deal before I fall asleep tonight, so it would be great if you could respond soon. Thank you in advance!

Silly Question for those savvy enough to answer. If this Synology is connected to a NUC and PLEX is installed/run on the NUC, how can the activity be masked going outward from the Synology and coming into the Client device (latest Apple TV)? Would NordVPN work? How would it work exactly? Thanks in advance for any brave souls that can answer

They're not just enclosures, but entire low-power computers. You're mainly paying for the software and support around it. You can build your own NAS with better specs for cheaper, which I have done, but you end up spending a ton of time on DIYing the hardware and software, you don't get as small and nice of a form factor, and the open-source software isn't as nice. I built my NAS a couple years ago and it's really powerful and feature-rich, but I'm going to buy a Synology soon to simplify things.
I agree, I thought about getting one of those recent Dell deals but reliability of 3rd party software and being able to access effortlessly especially remotely is a concern, also reliability (your drives may survive but not sure about computer running 24/7)

I need a sale on a 5-Bay ;_;
I don't even need 5, just 4 is enough for me, 8 Bay is a good price compared to 2 or 4 bays but I don't even think they have the latest 4 bay anymore, seems like most recent update is the 2 bay one with ability tag photos automatically with places/items/etc.

I am looking to get one so I can get rid of all my usb flash drives with my old backups, and dump all my pictures to stop paying online storage, but it's still risky in case something happens to drives, theft, fire, who knows what, so I think online storage will still be required just doesn't have to be fancy photo/data storage, just a dump somewhere.

Getting all the DVD's and BD's ripped and stored in plex is a good idea but only if plex runs straight out of these? I did that with rPI before, it was OK but when there was update, or if you had to make adjustment, it was pain.

Awesome NAS! I upgraded the memory to 32gb and put in the 10GB NIC and it's been perfect for everything I've thrown at it.
Can you share the NIC & memory model # you bought to upgrade your? TIA

I was previously eyeballing the 923 and now I'm fixed on the 1522 instead. Does anyone who has historical knowledge of these sales know if a similar discount for either of these other units is soon to follow? I missed a recent sale on the 923 because it lasted less than a day and I was traveling during said day.

Have you thrown 4K REMUX 10bit files at it? Can you give a little more detail on your use case please? And what hardware did you get specifically? Thanks in advance!

Synology will always have my money. They simply make good products that last. My original 2-Bay NAS lasted me nearly a decade and now has a new owner. My 4-bay will be lasting my awhile.
