As someone who plays from time to time, but normally just borrows a friends discs - would the available putter and one of the drivers be good to pair with a mid range as a starter set?

IMO go with the heavier putter. Drivers are a little more iffy imo to say "this is the one you want" and I'm not knowledgeable enough there.

If I'm starting someone out, I recommend an Innova Valkyrie in Champion plastic. Buzz is a great midrange, and both the Challenger and Banger putters are good. The GT on the Banger is nice , but a different feel than a "normal" putter like the Challenger.
Do they have different 'grades' of plastic like Innova? If so what grade is this? I am looking for something that can withstand a few wacks into big trees.

There's so many options in the $10-12 range, don't feel limited by this sale. Innova makes popular discs for beginners - Valkyrie, Roc. Prodigy and MVP/Axiom brands have good ones as well.
FYI, I saw warnings elsewhere that buying discs on Amazon is a gamble. Amazon doesn't necessarily look at the individual molds and tag them accordingly, they'll just slap a barcode sticker on the disc which may or may not be the disc you're looking for, i.e. you ordered a buzzz but get a Hades with a buzzz barcode on it. They also don't take care to package discs any special way. I'm all for disc golf deals, but in this case I'd recommend spending a couple extra bucks and buying from a disc golf specific retailer. Or even better, going to a local b&m shop where you can see and feel the discs beforehand.

Good to know, thanks. If there's anything weird about the Zeus I ordered, back to Kohl's it'll go

This site gives you the different plastic grades per company:

And if you're comfortable with factory seconds, Innova Pro Shop (https://proshop.innovadiscs.com/factory-second/) has a sale every Friday where if you buy at least 3 discs, they throw one in free. Last week was a Halo Savant.
Also, if you buy 10 discs, they take 20% off all of them so it brings it down to:
Star - $9.60/disc
Champ - $8.80/disc
Halo - $11.20/disc
Pro - $7.20/disc
GStar - $8.00/disc
DX - $4.80/disc
Which is pretty much the cheapest you'll find. You can specify weight with these, but not colour (although I've had pretty good luck adding a comment about colors to avoid).

PS Looks like the Zeus is $18.99 now.

Basically:
Z = Champion
ESP = Star (but slipperier IMO)
X = Pro
Jawbreaker = longer lasting putter plastic than baseline
