I much prefer the 3800 over the 4800 (more bang for the buck). Power-wise, they're in the same ballpark and measured SINAD differences aren't going to be audible. Also, "Made in Japan" just isn't what it used to be!

i agree about the made in japan comment. i have owned some upper end made in japan denon units and notice no difference versus those made elsewhere.

Part of that , in my opinion, is that this unit is vastly overpriced at MSRP
The MSRP should be about where this sale is currently, based on what else out there in the market. Especially when you roll in the Dirac fees and needed calibration mic

If you trade units often, as I do, then the made in Japan is worth a few hundred in resale.
I always think if there is anything I like better about it, go ahead due to the fact that it nets back to zero in resale anyway

Sonically..how much is worth is hard to say

They are making the $7500 Anthem AVM90 pre/pro in Vietnam these days and it is widely considered a top tier product.

I compared both and felt the features are similar but the 4800 has a better amp design so it is worth a little extra, but this was last year when the 4800 was $1299 at Adorama, $1899 does not seem like a good deal to me. Besides specs, the internal photos of the 4800 look a lot cleaner to me, I suspect the 3800 probably runs hotter, both have DAC issues, the 3800 is worse, 20W extra is a nice little bump. When the 4800 was a couple hundred more than the 3800, a better quality amp was worth it for me (more bang for the buck), but might not be for other buyers.

Agreed that at $1299, the 4800 was a no-brainer (that's actually cheaper than what I paid for my 3800!). Note that the 20W/channel extra is only for 2 channels (it's not as big a bump as you think).

Anyone know the usual lowest prices of the year for the 3800 and 4800? When does it usually happen? Also, anything interesting on the horizon for the 3900/4900?

Both dropped back mid December 3800 was $900, 4800 was $1300 but that sale was for a few hours at most.
Anyones guess if and when that would happened again!
They just came out with the 6800 at the beginning of the year.
Unlikely they will release anything else, maybe next year at the earliest.

Unfortunately there isn't much benefit going with the 4800 audible wise especially if you use or plan to use the pre outs.

If you have a Denon/Marantz now with access to the Editor app.
Something that just came out that can be very impressive is Audyssey One script.
It may save you from wanting to get a new AVR, used twice very impressed.
The best thing is the only cost is the $20 Editor app, REW also but that's free!

Do I need a fancy mic to use the Audyssey One script?

Caveat, I have not used the One Script but it looks interesting. But reading the instructions you need to use REW and the Audyssey app. To get accurate readings from REW, you really need to use a good, calibrated MIC like the umik-1, but I suppose technically, you could get an audio to USB converter to use the Audyssey microphone that comes with Denon on your laptop, but you are not going to get the most accurate measurements.

Not a good price as other have mentioned.

Last Denon receiver I bought was through Accessories4Less and they have the 4800H for $100 less than this price for Open Box and $200 less for Factory Refurbished. Both those options include 3 years total worth of warranty.

No you don't, REW is just used to import and adjustments of the script.

If someone was open to manufacture refurb I would add the Cinema 50 to this mix especially if you prefer Marantz sound signature.
It's closer to the 4800 than the 3800 feature wise.
It's $1499 with 5 years warranty(1 yr/4 cps)

Having compared all three pre & recently post Dirac, if that was a sale for new, would have been hard to resist it.
Especially after auditioning it with DLBC!

The new Directional setting is a definite step up but $560 for both DL & DLBC was too hard to pass up.
End up with two very good RCs.

Having finally getting to compare Audyssey and Dirac side by side.
Even more comparable, would have had no problem waiting to get Dirac if at all, nice that you can pay for it IF & when you want to!
Dirac and Marantz make a pretty impressive combination imo.

Your Cinema 50 rec makes no sense. You do realize the 3800 and the Cinema 50 are clones right?

The Marantz equivalent to the 4800 is the Cinema 40:
