These run on an existing OS and provide virtualization services.

You have to register for the support portal as shown above. You do not have to create a profile.


Then, you can use the link I provided above to get to all the vmware software, locate the vmware workstation pro section there. When you click on it, it will have links to Workstation Pro downloads. There are two download links there for Windows and Linux marked "Free for Personal Use". Click on your link. It will force you to certify you are a resident of the US and that you will not export the software. Once you have done that, you can start the download.

yeah that's not going to be a thing anymore with the broadcom acquisition, they've moved to monthly subs instead of perma licensing. existing keys may work for 6.x and 7 but expect them to be non existent for the latest and greatest.

Now with workstation/fusion free they are trying to assuage the homelabbers. Expect workstation to pop up in all the script kiddy kali how-tos now as an alternative to virtual box.

Homelabber who started with VMware workstation 8 almost 20 years ago, and just recently attempted to migrate my current VMs to HyperV (ended up just creating new HyperV machines, migrating was not successful). Even *old* VMWare was light-years ahead of modern HyperV in sharing camera, mic, and speakers, USB. I'm already regretting the switch. If this announcement is real I may switch back. I'll just wait long enough to ensure Broadcom doesn't have some surprise up their sleeve

what's the difference between workstation pro 17.0 for windows and workstation pro 17.0 for personal use (windows).

the idiot in me says the former will ask for a license key where the latter does not?

Yes, although vm will always give a performance hit because of the translation layers needed. Typically the experience will be best for older games.

I was able to play Lethal Company via VMware on my M2 Pro mini but it would often crash or have odd behaviors.

I just kept retrying over and over again. Finally got the Windows version. Still retrying for Linux.
