I've been out of the pc building game for awhile. Why is the 7800x3d considered a better gaming cpu than more expensive, higher models like the 7950 or i9's. Benchmarks show it as the best performing gaming cpu although it suffers on work applications.

Generally, it's said that the 3d cache (extra onboard memory for the cpu, essentially) helps tremendously in a lot of games. It doesn't benefit all games universally, but it does pull it ahead of otherwise faster chips in a lot of title. It's the reason why the 5800x3d was such a popular chip and good gaming performer, despite having a slightly slower clock speed than the regular 5800x and lower clocks and fewer cores than the 5900x.

You're right - it will be outperformed in applications where the extra cache doesn't matter. To me, any of these current higher end chips will work well for just about anyone.

Thanks for the info. Like you said, at this level, most people probably won't notice the difference between a few more or less frames per second. So I'll choose the processors that have more cores and perform a lot better on other non-game applications.

7800x3d has better process management then AMD's own faster and more expensive CPUs. Intel's i9 has a pretty different architecture. My experience with AMD processors hasn't been good, as I game some but have more other uses. And I really like having thunderbolt support. But if your primary purpose is playing games then AMD 7800x3d should be solid.
