To be clear, all Roku has done file a patent last August regarding a methods of ad delivery that would inject ads over paused content on HDMI inputs. Anyone who has followed any tech for any amount of time knows that patents are filled all the time without any plans or timeline for implementation.

But that didn't stop a few tech journalists from writing some sensationally clickbaity articles that resulted in the knee-jerk pearl-clutching seen above.

Would ads like that suck? Probably. Should you preemptively ditch Roku? Probably not, because if you did that based on every patent filing that might be considered "user-hostile", you would quickly run out of devices and platforms to use.

I like that the Roku search shows many different services in the results. Other companies limit it to themselves.
Free Roku channel free videos have the least ads too, usually 3-4x less minutes than the multiple others that offer the same free show

Example if I accidentally pick a freevee offering from prime. First 1:30 commercial break and realize my mistake. Load same video on Roku channel for 15-30 second ads.

Exactly! I'll add to that, why would I care if ads are playing on paused content? I'm not watching it anyway. I've been using Roku for several years and I have zero complaints and don't plan to change anytime soon.

Cinemax mainly shows B rated movies and lots of them. Quantity not quality. They used to show a lot of softcore porn but I'm not sure if they still do.

Max is just the expanded HBO.

Roku is my go to OS for smart TVs and add-on devices. I like that they are agnostic. Their revenue depends on viewers being able to use their OS on devices and TVs. Thus, it's in there best interest to program their OS to allow it work on older devices for longer than on Google or Amazon fireTV devices. The latter two companies have other revenue streams and OS efficiency is just a side gig for them. Does it matter to them if the OS runs slow on a budget SmartTVs? Not really. It will just encourage the user to buy a new TV/device.

The big tech streaming services Google, Apple, and Amazon built their streaming service to be walled gardens. This model is by design to monetize every aspect from the customer. Roku is neutral and I don't have to give up my privacy so that the big 3 companies can sell my data/metadata to advertisers or make more money under the "personalized" ad option.

When you compare the Roku Channel to Pluto, Tubi or Xumo, Roku actually has fewer ads than the others. As for channels that you have to pay for, I don't think Roku is allowed to put ads on those channels.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but the ads are so short on my Roku TV I barely have enough time to use the bathroom or grab a cold beer.. I don't mind ads as long as they're 60 seconds or less. I tried Tubi for the first time last night and they even give you a little notice at the top of the screen that are not just going to come on! I appreciate that

only the new ones have it I think, and they might have stopped it, but the fact that they were about to go through with it for newer TVs was insane. took a huge amount of backlash to stop, and even then they were considering to continue anyway
