Same price at REI if you'd rather buy there: https://www.rei.com/product/10128...ke-cleaner
It's just a spray soap like you'd get for cars, nothing special. Can be used on anything painted, really. I just use concentrated soaps and dilute. Significantly cheaper. I do use an auto soap on my road bike with a foam cannon.
I have this and I clean both my road and MTB bikes and overall it works pretty well, you just need to make sure that you wet the bike before application. It does get the crud off and soaps up well and is convenient with the spray bottle.

As another commenter noted there's probably no reason you need a bike specific cleaner and there are many other soap options which are far more cost effective.

Is this designed or recommended or even necessary for road bikes?

Or primarily for mountain bikes that get really muddy?

This stuff works wonders! I would say it's a necessity for all bike cleaning.

I've had good luck using this stuff to clean my RC vehicles. It leaves a nice clean sheen that makes things look new again. Would definitely recommend any of this brand's products.

What kind of soaps? What do you use specifically? What are soaps that can't be used on bikes?

If you mean if you can get it on them without harm, yes.
It's probably not the best to clean them though.

They do make one that does a good job assisting with that.
It is also on sale for $14.99 at REI.

Is this a gimmick or actually a recommended cleaning method? If so, I think I'll buy a bottle.

The muc off drivetrain cleaner is good for quick cleanings when just applying new lube. It's not a deep cleaner.
