They run about the same deal on single license in the $40-45 area fairly often. You cannot convert a family to a single.

Thanks OP!

Thank you, I'll setup a deal alert.
You can change between family and personal. This post lays out the process:

It doesn't state if additional time will be added though.

Can you use this M365 subscription and create an email address/account that's not a Microsoft domain? I.e. I own my own domain and want emails from there using M365 backend
Not anymore, this was possible with Family plans. But it was ended 11/30/2023. You now need a business plan to use a custom domain for emails.

You can create Microsoft accounts with any email address you want and assign M365 access, but you won't have the Outlook/email side through Microsoft. So if you have a grandfathered Google Workspace, or use a service like Zoho, you can have the M365 benefits associated with your domain name. But no [email protected] email being hosted by Microsoft with M365 Family.

This is a subscription to MS office suite offerings, not a onetime purchase of a specific software. It would last indefinitely (as long as you kept paying) and any/all updates would be automatically pushed through their subscription/cloud connection. You're just paying a small monthly fee to use their software, vs paying a high price upfront.

Gone are the days of buying software once, subscriptions are much more profitable for software developers, but protects consumers discontinuation.
